This article starts from the observation that the era of world literature, the Weltliteratur, which Johann Wolfgang von Goethe announced in his Conversations with Eckermann, has reached its final phase in the fourth phase of accelerated globalization, and is finally opening up in the 21st century, to the era of the Literatures of the World (Literaturen der Welt). In this new, decentralized context, and according to different logics, these Literatures of the World (the term is found in Erich Auerbach's work) include not only globalized and trans-regional literatures, but also literatures without a fixed abode, whose importance has not ceased to grow over the last decades. Situated in this completely new literary landscape, Latin America occupies a unique position at the global level. Taking into account the cultural and political history of the American hemisphere, this article analyzes the specific conditions and opportunities of Latin American literatures in the polylogical context of World Literatures.

Jahrhunderts. ; Alexander von Humboldt's manuscript "Isle de Cube. Antilles en général" can be read as the title of an entire archipelago of texts. Its radically open design is intriguing and gives us a sense of the ways in which this explorer of culture and nature modelled his writing but even more his thinking. His text miniatures encompass the political and social complexity of the Island World of the Caribbean in a relational and polylogical way. In combination with his Cuban maps and the Essai politique sur l'île de Cuba, this manuscript gives Humboldt a prominent place in Cuba's 19th century literature.

; This paper investigates the inextricable correlation between nature and culture and the 'no naturality' of the first, product of men's millenarian interventions, subsumed in the word "anthropocene". French philosophers Bruno Latour and Philippe Descola emphasized, in different ways, the importance of this relation for humans present and future. Bruno Latour works out the politics of nature, Philippe Descola underscore the ecological character of nature and culture. Both disregard the literatures of the world and their capabilities to store different drafts of conviviality and the fundaments of sustainability. Descolas inspiration in the outstanding figure of the 19th century, Alexander von Humboldt is also mentioned, and the inseparableness of nature and culture which the erudite distinguished in innumerable testimonies, for example, the one about the Chimborazo.

Towards Global Consciousness. Alexander von Humboldt's Conception of Science and the emerging ethical Weltanschauung. In the context of recent reflections upon global ethics (Hans Küng), global democracy (Otfried Höffe) and a new cultural situation after the end of the Cold War (Clifford Geertz), Alexander von Humboldt's concept of global consciousness (Weltbewußtsein) marks a decisive point in the ungoing process of the construction of a new ethics of globalization. This article tries to show how Humboldt's transdisciplinary and intercultural conception of sience as WorldWideWeb integrates Kant's philosophical visions of global political institutions and formulates a critique of the non-empirical foundations of Hegel's teleological Weltanschauung. From his Visions of Nature and his Personal Narrative to his Cosmos, Humboldt's theory and practice of science help us to find a new ethos and new answers to the contemporary questions of divergent modernities.

During his American expedition Humboldt grappled intensively with the iniquities of colonialism. In the year 1803, for example, he noted "that the idea of a colony is itself an immoral idea, this idea of a land which is obliged to pay dues to another country." The colonial powers, wrote Humboldt, support intolerance, repression and slavery. However, he did not express his criticism in public during the expedition but entrusted it only to good friends and his diary. The lecture treats Humboldt's political stance during the expedition, based on human rights and his communicative role as a research traveller who, having returned to Europe, made his criticism public. Central to the lecture are examples of Humboldt's criticism of representatives of the colonial system. These make clear which important impulses the researcher gave to the independence movement and to the politicians of the young American states.

; Alexander von Humboldt's world concepts inscribe themselves in the tradition of a reflexion on the second period of accerelated globalization during the second half of the 18th century. The polysemic structure of concepts like world consciousness (Weltbewusstsein) is embetted in a vision, understanding and practice of science that can be described as transdisciplinary, intercultural, democraticaly popularizing, cosmopolitan, fractal and transregional. Alexander von Humboldt's new discourse on the Americas can be best understood as a fine example for TransArea Studies highlighting an area's characteristics by developing its relationships and dynamics within a worldwide network of informations, dependencies, exchanges and correspondances.

This edited volume, which features essays from prominent German, Brazilian, and Portuguese scholars, deals with the personal relations and intensive intellectual collaboration between Joao Guimaraes Rosa (1908–1967) and his German translator Curt Meyer-Clason (1910–2012), a special case of German–Brazilian cultural exchange.
