AbstractExclusive breastfeeding is currently recommended until at least 6 months of postnatal age, due to maternal breast milk (BM) unique composition and beneficial properties. In fact, BM modifies itself according to gestational age (GA) at birth, adapting its composition to neonatal requests during lactation. Multiple births represent about 3% of the whole pregnancies; such neonates result more vulnerable than full-term newborns, due to lower GA and birth weight (BW) and the higher incidence of perinatal complications. Although an adequate nutrition is fundamental for twins and other multiples, studies on this topic are lacking. We collected and analyzed BM from mothers of 19 twins and 5 triplets showing GA < 33 weeks and BW < 1500 g, comparing it to a control group of 28 preterm singletons. As a result, at GA ≤ 28 weeks, we observed that protein content is higher in BM for multiples (1.53 vs. 1.29 g per 100 ml), lactose concentration is greater in BM for singletons (6.72 vs. 6.34 g per 100 ml) and GA results the most relevant factor influencing BM protein composition. BM for multiples results higher in proteins and lower in lactose, if compared with singleton's samples; this could promote and sustain growth and organ development in this vulnerable category. BM from multiples shows a trophic and immunologic role, since these neonates often show lower GA and BW instead of singletons. These findings could help in optimizing nutritional strategies and improving BM individualized fortification.

OBJECTIVE: The aim is to discover the perceptions of individuals living in different countries relating to Covid-19 and develop a joint initiative against this virus and future outbreaks by making comparisons over a number of sociological factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional research design was applied, which is a type of descriptive survey belonging to quantitative research. The sample was selected from various countries: Turkey, USA, France, Germany, Netherlands, Georgia, India, and South Africa. The total number of participants is 1020 people. The data were provided through the One-Way Anova Test and collected based on "The Covid-19 Perception Questionnaire" which contained 5 personal information and 10 items. RESULTS: We found that statistically significant differences among the Covid-19 perceptions of individuals. The effect size showed that this difference is at a large level. As the variances did not evenly distribute, the Dunnett C multiple comparison tests were applied. According to this, the highest mean in Georgia and India, the lowest mean in Germany and the USA. CONCLUSION: The majority have the national and international awareness required to cope with the pandemic. However, the source of the virus has still not been explained so it has been observed that the number of people who believe in conspiracy theories is also high. As a result, people need more reliable sources of information, especially the World Health Organization should make more precise explanations to people about the origin of Covid-19 and updated information should be made available to people constantly. In addition, although a long time passed after the appearance of the Covid-19, people are still confused.

AbstractEndometriosis is a common disease affecting women in reproductive age. There are several hypotheses on the pathogenesis of this disease. Often, its lesions and symptoms overlap with those of many other medical and surgical conditions, causing a delay in diagnosis. Metabolomics represents a useful diagnostic tool for the study of metabolic changes during a different physiological or pathological status. We used1H-NMR to explore metabolic alteration in a cohort of patients with endometriosis in order to contribute to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease and to suggest new useful biomarkers. Thirty-seven patients were recruited for the metabolomic analysis: 22 patients affected by symptomatic endometriosis and 15 not affected by it. Their serum samples were collected and analyzed with1H-NMR. Multivariate statistical analysis was conducted, followed by univariate and pathway analyses. Partial Least Square Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) was performed to determine the presence of any differences between the non-endometriosis and endometriosis samples (R2X = 0.596,R2Y = 0.713,Q2 = 0.635, andp < 0.0001). β-hydroxybutyric acid and glutamine were significantly increased, whereas tryptophan was significantly decreased in the endometriosis patients. ROC curves were built to test the diagnostic power of the metabolites (β-hydroxybutyric acid: AUC = 0.85 CI = 0.71–0.99; glutamine: AUC = 0.83 CI = 0.68–0.98; tryptophan: AUC = 0.75 CI = 0.54–0.95; β-hydroxybutyric acid + glutamine + tryptophan AUC = 0.92 CI = 0.81–1). The metabolomic approach enabled the identification of several metabolic alterations occurring in women with endometriosis. These findings may provide new bases for a better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease and for the discovery of new biomarkers. Trial registration number NCT02337816
