AbstractDespite the long history of racial hostility, African Americans after 1990 began moving from the city of Detroit to the surrounding suburbs in large numbers. After World War II, metropolitan Detroit ranked with Chicago, Cleveland, and Milwaukee for having the highest levels of racial residential segregation in the United States. Detroit's suburbs apparently led the country in their strident opposition to integration. Today, segregation scores are moderate to low for Detroit's entire suburban ring and for the larger suburbs. Suburban public schools are not highly segregated by race. This essay describes how this change has occurred and seeks to explain why there is a trend toward residential integration in the nation's quintessential American Apartheid metropolis.

Perhaps no city in the United States has a longer and more vibrant history of racial conflict than Detroit. It is the only city where federal troops have been dispatched to the streets four times to put down racial bloodshed. By the 1990s, Detroit was the quintessential "Chocolate City–Vanilla Suburbs" metropolis. In 2013, Detroit became the largest city to enter bankruptcy. It is an oversimplification and inaccurate to argue that racial conflict and segregation caused the bankruptcy of Detroit. But racial issues were deeply intertwined with fundamental population shifts and employment changes that together diminished the tax base of the city. Consideration is also given to the role continuing racial disparity will play in the future of Detroit after bankruptcy.

Racial residential segregation has a long and persistent history in the United States. Data from the most recent decade give hope that housing patterns and racial attitudes are moving—albeit slowly—toward integration.

Chronicles the formation & development of a multiracial movement in the US composed of married interracial couples designed to support each other & their mixed-race children. Ways in which groups such as the Assoc of MultiEthnic Americans (AMEA), together with civil rights activists, lobbied for changes in how racial information was collected & used are described. Their impacts on the dramatic change in the 2000 decennial census, which, for the first time, allowed respondents to select more than one category to designate their racial identification, are analyzed, & new federal policy stemming from the Office of Management & Budget's Directive 15 is reviewed. Newly available (Mar 2002) data from the 2000 census are presented to determine how many people actually utilized the new option in describing their race, & the geographic distribution of the multiple-race population by racial/ethnic group is graphically illustrated. The new enumeration yields 63 distinct races or racial combinations down to the lowest level of census geography -- the city block -- which, when tabulated according to Hispanic ethnicity, produce data for 126 different groups.
