An overview of the Marxist approach is presented which considers several subsidiary questions & mentions studies of them by Soviet economists & sociologists. The essence & significance of the scientific & technological revolution cannot be understood without taking into account the historical & social processes underlying it. Thus, the economic foundation for the scientific & technological revolution lies in the growth of collectivization & the scale of production which made possible large investments in scientific or industrial complexes. The accompanying problems of the development of productive forces & the increasing collectivization of production are identified, & the treatment of these problems by capitalist & socialist nations is compared. Examples are the problem of social equality & the problem of increasing isolation of the people from the administrative system & from their political representatives. Soviet thinkers, as opposed to those of the West, reject the view that scientific & technological progress can only exist at the expense of human progress; their approach to understanding problems of contemporary civilization is based on the idea of a unity of scientific, technical, social, & moral progress.
