In recent years, migration has emerged as one of the most politically charged issues in global society. From the Bangladeshi government's harsh treatment of thousands of Rohingya families fleeing the Burmese army's genocidal campaign against them in late summer of 2017, to the Trump administration's decision sustained attack on the new "sanctuary movement" and attempts to further militarize the southern border of the United States, news headlines and social media around the world are filled with images of repression against migrants, alongside impassioned calls for solidarity. Despite its ubiquity, the coverage of these events tends to remain rather superficial, making Solidarity without Borders a timely work that succeeds in unpacking some of the underlying issues related to migration and the festering crisis of global capitalism, and hopefully contributing to the development of a more powerful response from the left.

A project of researchers associated with the Glasgow Media Group, Bad News for Refugees seeks to shed light on the role of the media in shaping public opinion of refugees in the United Kingdom. Activists have denounced the increasing vilification of refugees by politicians and the press over the past decade and a half, and highlighted its coincidence with a shift towards a more punitive state response (Webber 2012). In view of the anti-migrant Ukip party's triumph in the EU parliamentary elections of May 2014, this book is an especially timely study that could prove useful in the fight against racist and xenophobic sentiment in Britain.

AbstractImmigration policy has repeatedly failed to fulfil the ambitions of its advocates. Successive governments have neither willed the means nor been open about the obstacles in their way to restricting immigration. Disappointing results have contributed to disillusionment with the political system and help to create the ground on which UKIP has prospered.
