Russia's victory in the "lightning war" against Georgia in the summer of 2008, after just a few days, was in fact illusory. Deploying obsolete equipment & defective communications systems, the Russian army revealed serious inadequacies during this short campaign. The Kremlin wasn't fooled by its victory & decided to accelerate military reforms, which had been suspended since the beginning of the decade. In this interview with Galia Ackerman, eminent Russian expert Pavel Felgengauer explains the ins & outs of this huge reform, which is being applied in brutal "Russian style." Hundreds of thousands of officers & soldiers are being dismissed, & entire garrisons eliminated. When everything is completed in a few years, Russia should have a modern, professional army. From that moment on, its immediate neighbors, starting with Ukraine, could well have something to worry about. Adapted from the source document.
