He considers how offenders find crime opportunities, adapt to new conditions, and cooperate with one another while drawing resources from the larger community

An organizing framework is useful for scientific progress as well as the application of knowledge in practical situations. This article advocates supplementing the classification of situational crime prevention methods, proposing seven levels of classification for how crime prevention policy is applied. The seven levels are organized by distance from the criminal event, and examples of application are offered in liquor control and auto theft reduction.

Routine activities deliver easy crime opportunities to the offender. Astute planners and managers can interfere with this delivery, diverting flows of likely offenders (such as adolescents) away from streams of suitable targets (such as television sets). They can engineer traffic to provide "natural surveillance." Past trends encouraged crime rate increases, but the developing metropolitan facility could reverse this, privatizing substantial portions of metropolitan turf.

Gleaning information from diverse available data sets, Felson suggests ways in which numerous different sorts of time-series data sets can be used to identify cultural change and continuity. The proposed indicators include musical instruments, several types of clothing, sporting goods, drugs, garbage, telephones, and magazines.

Automobiles, clothing, & places of residence are considered as socially stratified phenomena characterized by prestige hierarchies. Telephone interviews were conducted in May/June of 1974 with 730 Chicago-suburban households on the prestige of 7 automobiles, 5 department chain stores, & 10 suburbs. The large number of 'don't know' responses & the preponderance of 'average' ratings indicate that these hierarchies are less clearcut than the well-known occupational prestige hierarchy.
