The author discusses the evolution of environmental consciousness in Pacific island countries, deforestation, soil erosion, pollution of water supply, population pressures, the problem of waste disposal etc in these countries, responses by their governments to the need for institutional mechanisms to deal with environmental issues and the aid given by New Zealand and other countries to Pacific island countries to deal with environmental problems.
