Jump Lisbon! Notes from an ethnography of urban flows
In: Portuguese journal of social science, Band 14, Heft 2, S. 177-192
ISSN: 1758-9509
Abstract
Parkour is a relatively new practice in Portugal. It became popular in Lisbon because it has some public places, including Telheiras and the Parque das Nações, that are appreciated by parkour protagonists. Telheiras has a very special architecture that is ideal for parkour jumping, while the Parque das Nações is a renewed part of the city with good areas and is well served by public transport promoting the meetings between traceurs from across the city and the country. Focusing on the results of an ethnography that has these two points as its main research fields, we will discuss how an examination of these practices requires the construction of an ethnography of urban flows within a multi-scale analysis. This article is based on the results of doctoral research. Intensive fieldwork was carried out with participant observation and the use of ethnographic methodology in an attempt to understand the traceurs' map of Lisbon.

Artists against tourism gentrification: Analyzing creative practices of resistance in Porto
In: Debats. Revista de cultura, poder i societat, Band 137, Heft 1, S. 31-50
ISSN: 2530-3074
We examine how artists' work has been used to fight gentrification in Porto (Portugal) over the last five years. After mapping agents, projects, and initiatives, the paper selected six artists from different areas, and who work on housing and city rights-related issues. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the artists, and their practices and discourse were analyzed to discover their views on the city's transformations and the role Art and artists play in highlighting them. The interviews also revealed dilemmas and contradictions, such as: the tension between celebrating Porto's identity and avoiding tourism-phobia; the risks of Art being exploited for financial or political gain; the difficulty of striking a balance between artistic freedom and independence on the one hand, and funding and recognition on the other. One of the paper's findings is that such challenges reflect the precarious state of The Arts and Culture in Portugal today.

The use of digital technologies in the co-creation process of photo elicitation
In: Qualitative research journal
ISSN: 1448-0980
PurposeThis article approaches the possibilities of photo elicitation as a technique for social research in the landscape of technology-mediated instantaneous interpersonal communication.Design/methodology/approachThis case study, which involved persons with prison experience in the process of returning to the community, demonstrates how participant-generated photographs made with mobile handheld electronic devices and the meanings participants have attached to them allowed the research to take a co-creative turn.FindingsThe data analyzed show the potential of photo elicitation to build a link between researcher and researched that empowers the latter with agency in designing the results and also throughout the research process as a whole, thus allowing the former to reach a deeper level of understanding of the research participants' social reality.Originality/valueThe research conducted showcases the possibilities of this technique to approach the field of emotions from the ethnography and how they can build knowledge – especially in the work with vulnerable populations in vulnerable contexts – and generate new categories of analysis.

ATORES URBANOS, TRAJETÓRIAS E PROJETOS DE VIDA NA CIDADE: Abordagens etnográficas em perspectiva
In: Iluminuras: Publicação Eletrônica do Banco de Imagens e Efeitos Visuais, Band 23, Heft 63
ISSN: 1984-1191
