The objective of this article is to delve into the topic of sanctions in international relations, with a primary focus on the case of Iran, from a theoretical standpoint. The aim is to showcase that sanctions did not diminish Iran's regional importance but rather fostered increased cooperation between Iran and Russia. This article critically examines the efficacy of sanctions as a tool in US foreign policy, shedding light on the significant costs incurred due to the exclusion of Western businesses from the sanctioned Iranian market. By doing so, the article challenges the conventional wisdom surrounding sanctions and offers a nuanced perspective on their impact in the realm of international diplomacy.

The main goal of this paper is to examine the Trump administration's maximum-pressure policy toward the Islamic Republic of Iran. The main causes and rationale for withdrawing from the nuclear JCPOA are identified. In addition, the consequences of maximum pressure are addressed, which harm the so far failed JCPOA restoration negotiations. An additional thread in the article is a critical appraisal of the sanctions policy, which for decades has failed to deliver the results expected by the USA, which is an inhibiting factor in a dynamically changing international environment. Moreover, the costs to the US of sanctions pressure on Iran have been identified.

W artykule wskazano na korelację pomiędzy twardą i miękką siłą w relacjach amerykańsko-irańskich. Negatywne doświadczenia dominują we wzajemnych stosunkach pomiędzy nimi takie jak: amerykański interwencjonizm w sprawy wewnątrzirańskie, kryzys z zakładnikami amerykańskimi, terroryzm czy ostatnio irański program atomowy.
