Collective memory, like individual memory, is the backbone that holds identity together. But, I will argue, collective identity is inherently unstable, threatened with dissolving into itself. The contradiction between identity and its dissolution creates an inner tension, an ambivalence, akin to what Freud (1930) called an Unbehagen in der Kultur -- an unease or malaise in culture -- that is quickly divided, projected, and distributed into factions in the external world: political, economic, religious, cultural, and ideological. The internal unease and dissension then appears stabilised by its transformation into conflict between them. This fragile, but stabilised, situation can be thought of as an organisation of these factions. Each is now threatened by attack from outside itself, rather than dissolution from the inside, and all are drawn together into a system. The story of this organisation is recorded in the interlocking collective memories of these factions, and the whole system offers a haven from the dread of internal collapse. It is clear from the title that this paper has an historiographical emphasis, one which might seem naive to the professional historian, but one which is not at all so naive to the historian of science or medicine. For me, these disciplines should speak to the present; my aim is to direct our attention to the failure of the history of medicine in this respect, and to suggest possible linkages with the human sciences, whose energies are so directed. I do not mean that its subject matter must be drawn from contemporary events—sometimes the very foreignness of the past allows an encapsulation of a situation which gives a clearer view both of the constraints operative within it, and of the unities underlying apparent diversity. This clarity can then encourage a more perceptive reflexion back to the present.

FAEL (Free Associations/ East London) besteht in Grossbritannien seit Ende der 70er-Jahre als loser Zusammenschluss von politisch interessierten Personen, in erster Linie aus dem sozialen Bereich, der Politik, den Medien und anderen. In verschiedenen Zusammenhängen beschäftigen sie sich mit einem gemeinsamen Anliegen, nämlich mit der Verbindung von Psychoanalyse und einem von ihnen als kulturell definierten Marxismus mit dem Ziel, dem sozialistisch begründeten politischen Prozess neue Impulse und Vitalität zu geben. Dabei spielen die britischen Objektbeziehungstheorien eine grosse Rolle. Begriffe wie Entfremdung und projektive Identifizierung werden miteinander in Beziehung gesetzt und untersucht. The authors discuss the processes by which the ground for political violence is prepared, and how violent acts are facilitated. They question how social, cultural and political constellations can develop in such a way that, for certain people in this constellation, violence becomes a logical? perversely reasonable? response. This collection demonstrates what a psychoanalytic perspective can bring to existing approaches to political violence, going beyond the social movement approach by unfolding the inherent ambiguity in accepted concepts within the study of political violence. Steffen Krüger is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo, Norway. He develops critical, psychosocial approaches to media texts and discourses. Karl Figlio is in private psychoanalytic practice, and is also Professor Emeritus within the Department for Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies, at the University of Essex, UK. His research includes psychoanalytic methodology, fundamentalism, memory and reparation. Barry Richards is Professor of Political Psychology at Bournemouth University, UK. He has long-standing interests in terrorism and political violence, in social cohesion, and in national identity and nationalisms.
