This work focuses on the evaluation of the factors of quality of life in a sample of 26 countries. Quality of life is a complex, multidimensional concept, which includes various social, cultural, economic, political, demographic and environmental aspects. Regarding this, principal component analysis and regression analysis were chosen as relevant methods to analyse relationships among twenty-five variables related to quality of life, and their relationships with three composite indices reflecting crucial aspects of quality of life, wellbeing and sustainability. These indices, applied as the response variables in the regression analysis, include the inequality-adjusted alternative of the Human Development Index (IHDI), the Happy Planet Index (HPI), and Healthy Life Years (HLY). The IHDI represents an objective indicator of human development and wellbeing. HLY reflects quality of life in terms of health. The HPI combines the ecological efficiency with which human wellbeing is delivered, while it also includes a subjective measure of wellbeing. Since each of these indices represent different aspects of quality of life to a certain extent, some of the factors (represented by selected indicators) affected them in different ways. After applying a Lasso regression, nine of the 25 indicators - representing crucial factors of quality of life - were identified. Homicide rate (representing the factor of safety) affected all three indices in a negative way, whereas Years in education (representing the factor of education) and Life satisfaction - a subjective indicator of wellbeing representing the dimension of the same name, affected them positively. ; Niniejsza praca koncentruje się na ocenie czynników jakości życia na próbie 26 krajów. Jakość życia to złożone, wielowymiarowe pojęcie, które obejmuje różne aspekty społeczne, kulturowe, ekonomiczne, polityczne, demo graficzne i środowiskowe. W związku z tym wybrano analizę głównych składowych i analizę regresji jako odpo wiednie metody analizy relacji między 25 zmiennymi odnoszącymi się do jakości życia oraz ich związków z trzema złożonymi wskaźnikami odzwierciedlającymi kluczowe aspekty jakości życia, dobrostanu i zrównoważo nego rozwoju. Po zastosowaniu regresji Lasso zidentyfikowano dziewięć z 25 wskaźników – repre zentujących kluczowe czynniki jakości życia. The type of health system in each country and the resources devoted to it determine its outcomes. Relationships between ratios of expenditure to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) classified by provider and indicators reflecting health outcomes in 2015 are examined for 30 countries by means of a compositional data analysis and a regression analysis. The countries in the sample are the European Union (EU-28) countries plus Iceland and Norway. The outcome indicators used are life expectancy at birth (LE); healthy life years in absolute value at birth for females (HLYf) and for males (HLYm); and death rate due to chronic diseases (DR) (response variables). The results indicate that the higher the ratio of expenditure on retailers and other providers of medical goods in relation to other types of expenditure in the composition, the higher the DR indicator and the lower the LE indicator. The ratio of expenditure on residential long-term care facilities in the composition seems to have had a positive effect on both HLY indicators. The effect of expenditure ratios on providers of healthcare system administration and financing is not straightforward. ; Rodzaj systemu opieki zdrowotnej w każdym kraju i środki na niego przeznaczone determinują jego skuteczność. W tej pracy zbadano zależności między stosunkami wydatków do produktu krajowego brutto (PKB), a wskaźni-kami odzwierciedlającymi wyniki zdrowotne w 2015 r. w 30 krajach za pomocą analizy danych złożonych (CoDA) i analizy regresji. To kraje Unii Europejskiej (UE-28) oraz Islandia i Norwegia. Stosowanymi wskaźnikami wyni-ków są: oczekiwana długość życia w chwili urodzenia (LE); lata zdrowego życia w wartości bezwzględnej przy urodzeniu dla kobiet (HLYf) i dla mężczyzn (HLYm); oraz wskaźnik zgonów z powodu chorób przewlekłych (DR). Wyniki wskazują, że im wyższy stosunek wydatków na zdrowie w stosunku do innych rodzajów wydatków, tym wyższy wskaźnik DR i niższy wskaźnik LE. Stosunek wydatków na placówki długoterminowej opieki zdro-wotnej miał pozytywny wpływ na oba wskaźniki HLY. The European Union (EU) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicator set replaced the EU Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS) in 2017. The selected indicators of this set were chosen for the analysis to classify the sample of the 28 EU countries along with Norway according to their performance in sustainability. In the selection of indicators, priority was given to the indicators reflecting the social dimension of SD, along with important representatives of the economic, ecological and institutional dimensions of SD generally. Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were applied to the data of 12 indicators in the period 2012- 2016. By means of the HCA, four clusters were created in each year of the period 2012-2016 using the indicator values of particular years and then using all the indicator values in all the monitored years for the general assignment of countries to particular clusters. According to changes in the assignment to particular clusters over the years, the sustainability of development and the path of SD in the examined countries are assessed. As regards the core countries of each cluster, cluster 1 includes the most developed EU countries and is thus evaluated as the best performing cluster. Cluster 2 including the least developed EU countries is evaluated as the worst performing cluster. Cluster 3 predominantly includes the transitive economies and it is evaluated as the second best performing cluster according to the indicators applied. Cluster 4 containing the Southern countries is assessed as the second worst performing cluster. From the shifts of countries that occurred between the years, the shift of Ireland from cluster 3 to cluster 1 in 2013 must be emphasised as the move towards higher sustainability. The shift of Slovakia and Hungary from cluster 2 to cluster 3 in 2013 is also evaluated as progress towards higher sustainability. ; W Unii Europejskiej w 2017 r. W tej pracy wybrane wskaźniki odnoszące się do nowych Celów zrównoważonego rozwoju stano-wią podstawę klasyfikacji 28 krajów Wspólnoty oraz Norwegii. Wśród tych wskaźników priorytetowo potrakto-wano te odnoszące się do wymiaru społecznego zrównoważonego rozwoju, uzupełniając dyskusję o podstawowe wskaźniki ekonomiczne, ekologiczne i instytucjonalne. Przeanalizowano okres obejmujący lata 2012-2016. Wo-bec wybranych 12 wskaźników zastosowano hierarchiczną analizę skupień i analizę głównych składników. Utworzono cztery klastry w ramach każdego roku z analizowanego okresu, określając wartości wskaźników dla po-szczególnych lat, a następnie określenie wszystkich wartości wskaźników dla wszystkich monitorowanych lat umożliwiło przypisanie krajów do poszczególnych klastrów. Określenie zmian w przypisaniu do poszczególnych klastrów na przestrzeni lat umożliwiło ocenę zrównoważoności rozwoju i określenie ścieżki zrównoważonego rozwoju badanych krajów. Jeśli chodzi o główne kraje każdego klastra, to klaster 1 obejmuje najbardziej rozwi-nięte kraje UE i dlatego jest oceniany jako klaster, który osiąga najlepsze wyniki. Klaster 2 uwzględnia najsłabiej rozwinięte kraje i oceniony jest jako ten, który osiąga najgorsze wyniki. Klaster 3 obejmuje głównie gospodarki znajdujące się w okresie przejściowym i jest oceniany jako drugi osiągający najlepsze wyniki. Klaster 4 obejmuje kraje Południa i jest oceniany jako drugi osiągający najgorsze wyniki. Uwzględniając zmiany jakie zaszły w okre-sie kolejnych lat, należy podkreślić przesunięcie Irlandii z klastra 3 do klastra 1 w 2013 r., co oznacza ruch w kierunku większej zrównoważoności. INTRODUCTION: We investigated whether governmental measures and lockdowns during the COVID‐19 pandemic had an impact on the number and histopathologic stages of melanoma. METHODS: The number and thickness (Breslow) of all diagnosed melanomas per day, month, or period at the 'Institute for Pathology in the Centre' in 2019 and 2020 were compared. For 2020, we defined four time periods: Period 1: 1 January–15 March; Period 2: 16 March–15 May (Lockdown 1); Period 3: 16 May–2 November; Period 4: 3 November–7 December (Lockdown 2). RESULTS: We found similar melanoma numbers in 2019 (577) and 2020 (608). The mean number of diagnoses per day during Lockdown 1 (Period 2) was significantly lower (0.87 melanomas/day; p = 0.005) when compared to the respective time periods in 2019 and to the other three periods in 2020 (Period 1: 1.65 melanomas/day, Period 3: 1.77 melanomas/day, and Period 4: 2.49 melanomas/day). Tumour thickness in July 2020 (1.9 mm) was significantly higher (p = 0.02) than in July 2019 (1.1 mm). DISCUSSION: The significant lower number of histopathologic diagnoses of melanoma during 'Lockdown 1' may be explained by postponed or missed patient consultations. This assumption is supported by the demonstration of a higher tumour thickness in July and August 2020, compared to 2019.

AbstractThe guidelines for setting environmental quality standards are increasingly based on probabilistic risk assessment due to a growing general awareness of the need for probabilistic procedures. One of the commonly used tools in probabilistic risk assessment is the species sensitivity distribution (SSD), which represents the proportion of species affected belonging to a biological assemblage as a function of exposure to a specific toxicant. Our focus is on the inverse use of the SSD curve with the aim of estimating the concentration, HCp, of a toxic compound that is hazardous to p% of the biological community under study. Toward this end, we propose the use of robust statistical methods in order to take into account the presence of outliers or apparent skew in the data, which may occur without any ecological basis. A robust approach exploits the full neighborhood of a parametric model, enabling the analyst to account for the typical real‐world deviations from ideal models. We examine two classic HCp estimation approaches and consider robust versions of these estimators. In addition, we also use data transformations in conjunction with robust estimation methods in case of heteroscedasticity. Different scenarios using real data sets as well as simulated data are presented in order to illustrate and compare the proposed approaches. These scenarios illustrate that the use of robust estimation methods enhances HCp estimation.

This book offers a collection of recent contributions and emerging ideas in the areas of robust statistics presented at the International Conference on Robust Statistics 2015 (ICORS 2015) held in Kolkata during 12-16 January, 2015. The book explores the applicability of robust methods in other non-traditional areas which includes the use of new techniques such as skew and mixture of skew distributions, scaled Bregman divergences, and multilevel functional data methods; application areas being circular data models and prediction of mortality and life expectancy. The contributions are of both theoretical as well as applied in nature. Robust statistics is a relatively young branch of statistical sciences that is rapidly emerging as the bedrock of statistical analysis in the 21st century due to its flexible nature and wide scope. Robust statistics supports the application of parametric and other inference techniques over a broader domain than the strictly interpreted model scenarios employed in classical statistical methods. The aim of the ICORS conference, which is being organized annually since 2001, is to bring together researchers interested in robust statistics, data analysis and related areas. The conference is meant for theoretical and applied statisticians, data analysts from other fields, leading experts, junior researchers and graduate students. The ICORS meetings offer a forum for discussing recent advances and emerging ideas in statistics with a focus on robustness, and encourage informal contacts and discussions among all the participants. They also play an important role in maintaining a cohesive group of international researchers interested in robust statistics and related topics, whose interactions transcend the meetings and endure year round

Im Zuge des Forschungsvorhabens wurde die Wissensgrundlage zu bestimmten POPs und POP-Kandidaten, insbesondere den dl-PCBs und ausgewählten PCB Ersatzstoffen, namentlich SCCP, PBDE und HBCD für die jeweiligen Stoffe und Stoffgruppen recherchiert und detailliert dargestellt. Mit dem Ziel, die Ursachen für deren ubiquitäres Vorkommen in der Umwelt und die Mechanismen und Ausbreitungspfade besser zu verstehen, wurden die Zusammenhänge zwischen Quellen, Pfaden und Senken und Verbleib in der Umwelt diskutiert. Die Ergebnisse tragen dazu bei, zukünftig Schadstoffquellen und Kontaminationsursachen besonders der Umwelt aber auch von Lebensmitteln leichter ausfindig machen zu können, eine zügige Ursachenaufklärung zu ermöglichen sowie Maßnahmen zu ermöglichen, um das Belastungsrisiko von POPs und deren Ersatzstoffen in der Umwelt zu verringern. Relevante Länderbehörden und Institutionen wurden um die Bereitstellung von Daten zu dl-PCB, SCCP, PBDE und HBCD aus Messprogrammen gebeten, die im Rahmen dieses Projekts für eine Aufnahme in die POP-Dioxin-Datenbank des Bundes und der Länder geeignet sind. Zusätzlich wurden die im Rahmen der Literaturrecherche identifizierten Publikationen nach geeigneten Messdaten überprüft und ggf. die Autoren nach Originaldaten gefragt. Der Fokus der zu untersuchenden Kompartimente lag dabei auf der Technosphäre, der Luft (Immission, Deposition und Emission) und pflanzlichen Biota. Der Datenbestand der POP-Dioxin-Datenbank konnte erheblich erweitert werden. Insgesamt wurden Daten von ca 1.800 Proben erfasst. Um mögliche Verursacher (Quellen oder Quellprozesse) für die Kontamination von Umweltproben zu identifizieren, wendet man in der Regel statistische Verfahren zum Mustervergleich von Stoffprofilen an. Seit einigen Jahren stellt die Statistik für derartige Auswertungen spezielle Verfahren der sogenannten "Kompositionsdaten-Statistik" (CoDa) zur Verfügung, die allerdings bisher nur selten eingesetzt werden. Im Rahmen des Projektes wurde ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die Erprobung dieser Verfahren anhand der in der POP-Dioxin-Datenbank verfügbaren Daten gelegt.

ABSTRACT
ObjectivesIn healthcare it is crucial to have a fundamental knowledge of the burden of diseases within the population. Therefore we aimed to develop an Atlas of Epidemiology to gain better insight on the epidemiological situation. Based on primary and secondary health care data, we aimed to present results in interactive charts and maps, comprehensible to experts and the general public. The atlas builds a framework for rapid deployment of new data and results in a reproducible and efficient way. As a first use case three methods based on two different databases for the estimation of diabetes prevalence in Austria are compared.
ApproachDatasources: (i) reimbursement data 2006/2007 (GAP-DRG); (ii) national routine health survey (ATHIS) for 2006/2007. Methods for diabetes prevalence estimation: 1) ATC-ICD statistically relates pseudonymized data on medications to data on diagnoses from hospitalizations and sick leaves. 2) With the method Experts, medical experts assign specific medications to diabetes diagnoses. Patients with these medications are identified together with hospitalized diabetes diagnosed patients in GAP-DRG. 3) In ATHIS a sample of 15.000 persons was questioned if they a) ever had diabetes and b) were treated against diabetes in the last 12 months. Results are projected onto the Austrian population. Patients are divided by 10-year age-classes, gender and state. For the publicly online framework, implemented in html and javascript, pre-processed data in different granularity is required and used.
ResultsMaps of Austria represent the prevalence of diabetes for each method and granularity level. The difference of the methods can be seen by clicking on the next map. For different age-classes (resp. different gender) the three methods can be compared directly within a bar chart. The technology for a rapid deployment of new data is now developed. For the use case first results have already been presented to decision makers, and feedback has been incorporated.
ConclusionBesides depicting disease prevalence, the atlas of epidemiology also allows to visualize health care service data and results of simulation models in a fast and efficient way, which is important for decision makers. Soon the results of the ATC-ICD project on the prevalence of different diseases based on ICD9 diagnoses and medication data will be published in an aggregated form. This project is part of the K-Project dexhelpp in COMET – Competence Centers for Excellent Technologies that is funded by BMVIT, BMWGJ and transacted by FFG.
