This book draws an updated Euro-American conceptual map, starting from a limited number of strategic terms whose meanings today are judged univocal and permanent, while in fact daily use has turned them into "common sense", depriving them of their ambiguity - an original feature of language, particularly relevant when it comes to literary use. By re-examining the proper noun for each of the selected notions, the contributors' common intent is to shed light on their polysemous nature and linguistic fluidity, in spite of the common tendency towards simplification and homogeneity imposed by hegemonic cultural paradigms. Along this line, the book explores the great divides between identity and otherness (or common or alien) in order to recover a sense of cultural identity which is at once polymorphous and polyphonic.

; The lesson of Fernando Pessoa and, more generally, of the Portuguese Modernists seems to have greatly influenced the poetic production of Jorge de Sena. The ideological and aesthetic space that the Lisbon writer shares with the avant-gardes of the 1920s and 1930s is that of a different and alternative poetics, marked, that is, by an iconoclastic and anti-canonical commitment that also spills over into a rejection of the authoritarian regimes in force, first in Portugal and then in Brazil – a country in which he voluntarily exiled himself and from which he was forced to leave after the golpe of 1964. My text will attempt to read both the poetic and non-fictional production of Jorge de Sena starting from his determination to stubbornly escape the impositions of Power: a laborious intransigence that crosses a world in ruins and is dramatically crossed by the awareness of the decline of every perspective, libertarian and truly democratic.
The essay analyzes the relationships between Brazilian modernism and the European avant-gardes of the early 20th century. The paper then re-examines Marinetti and de Andrade's manifestos, as they try to define the 'economic' space of the Modern and the 'political' construction of a truly national culture. In particular, the essay will focus on the cultural similarities and differences between the two geopolitical dimensions, with regard to the problematic relationship between past and present, archaic and modern, memory and forgetting, tradition and innovation. Time becomes both an experience and the expression of history, forcing us to reflect about the relational and the intersubjective patterns of modernity, considered through the lenses of language and of representation.
