Personalisation has become one of the major buzz words within service delivery in a short space of time. It is said to have its roots/routes within the disabled people's movement because of its association with concepts such as 'self-determination', 'independent living', 'choice' and 'control'. Rather than explore what personalisation is, this article considers the central ideas that have informed disability politics within the United Kingdom over the last 30 years to see to what extent they have indeed informed the personalisation agenda. It will be argued that the tensions between dominant ideologies and practices associated with disability and the alternative social oppression approach have not been resolved, but hidden by the process of transforming radical ideas into ones that can be absorbed into the status quo. The chameleon characteristics of the personalisation agenda have allowed it to appear attractive to the more politically accommodating sections of the disabled community.
