The article's approach to sati and similar phenomena is functionally and morally neutral. A society that practices following in death is not, for that matter, considered inferior. Schneewind, however, pleads for a normative moral approach, ranking societies according to their ability to rid themselves of harmful customs. What in the article is shown as a mere functional difference between European (or Christian) and (some) non-Western societies thereby appears as an illegitimate Eurocentrism or ethnocentrism. Such a view should not be read into the text, as it will inhibit consideration of important questions.

Sati, the custom of burning widows alive with the bodies of their husbands, is not a phenomenon unique to India, if its function (and not merely its appearance) is taken into account. All over the world, in many societies where there is widespread belief in the continuation of an individual's position in the hereafter, the social and political order has been confirmed and strengthened by the provision of attendants for deceased persons: at their funerals, the deceased were followed, either voluntarily or involuntarily, by their subordinates, who either were killed or killed themselves in public rituals.

Der Autor skizziert die Verfahrensweisen eines ungleichen Wahlrechts in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart und beschreibt die vordemokratischen Einschränkungen der Demokratie sowie den postdemokratischen Minderheitenschutz. Er weist darauf hin, dass die Formel vom allgemeinen, gleichen, direkten und geheimen Wahlrecht auch heute noch einige Brisanz besitzt, und zwar nicht nur in Diktaturen, sondern selbst da, wo die Demokratie tief verankert ist. So dient zum Beispiel weder der US-Senat noch der Schweizer Ständerat generell dem Minderheitenschutz. Der Föderalismus ist nicht notwendigerweise mit dem Minderheitenschutz verbunden. Minderheitenschutz lässt sich im Grunde nur historisch und nicht demokratietheoretisch rechtfertigen. Minderheitenschutz muss nach Meinung des Autors direkt bei den Gütern einsetzen, die gegen Mehrheitsentscheide geschützt werden sollen, und sie solchen Entscheiden ganz oder teilweise entziehen.
