New Light on Black Elk and The Sacred Pipe
In: American Indian culture and research journal: AICRJ, Band 41, Heft 4, S. 71-91
This article provides new information that will oblige scholars to reassess the legacy of Black Elk (1863–1950), including excerpts from recently discovered unpublished letters written by Joseph Epes Brown while he was living with the Lakota holy man (1947–49). The author provides insights into Brown's personal philosophy and a clearer context for the editorial role he played in recording The Sacred Pipe: Black Elk's Account of the Seven Rites of the Oglala Sioux. Brown's letters also help to illuminate Black Elk's role in attempting to restore the sacred "religion of the Pipe" among the Sioux and to clarify controversies that include Black Elk's dual participation in Catholicism.

Character Evidence and the Literature of the Theophrastan Character: A Phenomenology of Testimony
In: Studies in law, politics, and society, Band 34, S. 133-153
The relationship between legal proof & character evidence is examined to reconceptualize the status of legal judgment as truth. An overview of previous philosophical approaches to the connection between mathematics & proof is presented to demonstrate that proof itself is not simply one phenomenon that exists among others, but is the articulation of an object's phenomenology; consequently, it is suggested that the veracity of legal judgments are threatened by the possibility that judicial officials may misinterpret the truth of a piece of evidence. The works of Greek philosopher Theophrastus & of various 17th- & 18th-century English writers who addressed the issue of personal character are subsequently analyzed to better understand the connection between character evidence & truth. Rather than understand legal proof as evidence that is shown, it is argued that proof actually hides while calling forth information that is perceived as evidence. Therefore, it is asserted that imputations of character provided during witnesses' testimonies are ironic since such evidence may not capture the truth of a person's character. 21 References. J. W.
