The employment of Aborigines in health and education has long held promise not just for the improved delivery of these services but for greater community self‐management. However, the operation of these workers in European and traditionally oriented Aboriginal social fields is subject to many pitfalls. This paper draws on recent studies of education and health services at the community level to discuss some of these.
