Abstract. We describe a new geophysical network deployed in the Cape Verde Archipelago for the assessment and monitoring of volcanic hazards as well as the first results from the network. Across the archipelago, the ages of volcanic activity range from ca. 20 Ma to present. In general, older islands are in the east and younger ones are in the west, but there is no clear age progression of eruptive activity as widely separated islands have erupted contemporaneously on geological timescales. The overall magmatic rate is low, and there are indications that eruptive activity is episodic, with intervals between episodes of intense activity ranging from 1 to 4 Ma. Although only Fogo Island has experienced eruptions (mainly effusive) in the historic period (last 550 yr), Brava and Santo Antão have experienced numerous geologically recent eruptions, including violent explosive eruptions, and show felt seismic activity and geothermal activity. Evidence for recent volcanism in the other islands is more limited and the emphasis has therefore been on monitoring of the three critical islands of Fogo, Brava and Santo Antão, where volcanic hazard levels are highest. Geophysical monitoring of all three islands is now in operation. The first results show that on Fogo, the seismic activity is dominated by hydrothermal events and volcano-tectonic events that may be related to settling of the edifice after the 1995 eruption; in Brava by volcano-tectonic events (mostly offshore), and in Santo Antão by volcano-tectonic events, medium-frequency events and harmonic tremor. Both in Brava and in Santo Antão, the recorded seismicity indicates that relatively shallow magmatic systems are present and causing deformation of the edifices that may include episodes of dike intrusion.

Dams have contributed to the human development and have brought many benefits, such as delivering hydropower, irrigating agricultural fields, supplying drinking water, or just for navigational and recreational purposes. Nevertheless, dams are critical structures that raise multiple concerns and risks associated with the ecological, social and economic impact. Angola has a rich and complex network of water basins and dams that serves different strategic purposes as defined in its water resource management policy and respective strategic plan that, namely, considers relevant to build new dams and to better operate the existent ones. In fact, some of the most important dams in Angola are equipped with safety management information devices that perform data collection and storage for infrastructural analysis and reporting. However, many of these systems are currently in a critical condition. The civil war of 1975-2002 took a toll on dam safety measures and systems and most of them are outdated or malfunctioning. The dams that are presently under construction, like Matala, will already be equipped with safety management devices that are able to perform measurement of variables such as displacement and discharges, among others. Yet, new and adequate legislation must be created for all these efforts to effectively take place: the National Dam Safety Plan may provide the answer and framework to this state of affairs. Additionally, in this paper we assert that a more complex and integrated system can help to achieve this plan. Hence, the main contribution of this paper is the proposal of the gestBarragens-2, a next-generation Dam Safety Management System (DSMS), particularly fitting for the geographic and political context of Angola. This DSMS highlevel architecture reflects our experience with the design, development and operation of a former DSMS in Portugal over this last decade, but also the state of art analysis and our own learning process, introspection and criticism. The gestBarragens-2 architectural view defines the complex integration of several subsystems in two complementary dimensions: the applicational and the technological. The applicational subsystems are mainly functional, while the technological subsystems provide crosscutting features that are widely used in the DSMS as a whole. ; DBB/NO

Abstract. Scientists play a key role in volcanic risk management, but rely heavily on fast access to data acquired in the vicinity of an active volcano. Hazardous volcanoes are often located in remote areas were telecommunications infrastructure is fragile. Besides being exposed directly to the volcanic hazard, the infrastructure in such remote areas can also suffer from "last mile" limitations derived from lack of market demand for data transmission services. In this paper, we report on the findings of the FP7 MIAVITA project in the topic of volcanic data transmission. We draw on the contribution of partners from emergent or developing countries to identify the main bottlenecks and fragilities. We also present the results of an experiment conducted on Fogo Island, Cape Verde, to test the availability of VSAT services adequate for volcanic monitoring. We warn against the false sense of security resulting from increasingly ubiquitous connectivity, and point out the lack of reliability of many consumer-type services, particularly during emergencies when such services are likely to crash due to excess of demand from the public. Finally, we propose guidelines and recommend best practices for the design of volcanic monitoring networks in what concerns data transmission. In particular, we advise that the data transmission equipment close to the exposed area should be owned, operated and maintained by the volcanic monitoring institution. We exemplify with the set-up of the Fogo telemetric interface, which uses low-power licence-free radio modems to reach a robust point of entry into the public network at a suitable distance from the volcano.

These small vents are commonly monogenetic and many eruptions of this type of volcano involve activity at more than one such vent: lines of volcanic cones are often produced by eruptions fed by dykes, and if more than one dyke is emplaced during an eruption these vents can be along different alignments, and many kilometres apart. Identifying which vents were produced in which eruptions is an important problem in reconstructing the development of multiplevent volcanoes. Reconstruction of historical and sub-historical eruptions of two oceanic island volcanoes, the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands and Chadas Caldeiras volcano on Fogo, Cape Verde Islands, has indicated that historical eyewitness accounts and archaeological evidence can be extremely valuable adjuncts to detailed geological studies. In contrast, secondary accounts including folk memories and earlier accounts in the scientific literature are commonly inconsistent both with the eyewitness accounts and with the results of detailed geological rnapping, archaeological evidence or other historical documents. A common source of error is confusion of the vents of historical eruptions with older but larger or more prominent volcanic vents that lie along the same line of sight as viewed from adjacent settlements or from convenient viewpoints. Examples of this are provided by mis-locations of the vents of the AD 1677 eruption on La Palma and of some of the vents of the AD 1951 eruption on Fogo. Another problem arises when the location or style of eruption on a volcano has changed in early historical time, as has occurred on Fogo. We compared Google Trends terms related to allergy and rhinitis in all European Union countries, Norway and Switzerland from 1 January 2011 to 20 December 2016. The aim was to assesswhether the same terms could be used to report the seasonal variations of allergic diseases. Using the Google Trend 5-year graph, an annual and clear seasonality of queries was found in all countries apart from Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Malta. Different terms were found to demonstrate seasonality depending on the country - namely 'hay fever', 'allergy' and 'pollen' - showing cultural differences. A single set of terms cannot be used across all European countries, but allergy seasonality can be compared across Europe providing the above three terms are used. Using longitudinal data in different countries and multiple terms, we identified an awareness-related spike of searches (December 2016).

SUNFRAIL (Reference Sites Network for Prevention and Care of Frailty and Chronic Conditions in community dwelling persons of EU Countries), a European Union project, assessed whether MASK is in line with the 28 items of JA-CHRODIS. A short summary was proposed for each item and 18 experts, all~members of ARIA and SUNFRAIL from 12 countries, assessed the 28 items using a Survey Monkey-based questionnaire. A visual analogue scale (VAS) from 0 (strongly disagree) to 100 (strongly agree) was used. Agreement equal or over 75% was observed for 14 items (50%). MASK is following the JA-CHRODIS recommendations for the evaluation of Good Practices.
