The purpose of the study was to analyse the impact of Norwegian commodity assistance and import support to Bangladesh. The analysis covered both macro-economic effects and the purchases, deliveries and use of individual types of goods. The analysis covers the period 1978-85 when commodity aid represented around 70% of total bilateral Norwegian assistance to Bangladesh. The report concludes that Norwegian commodity aid has not had any direct impact on the living conditions of the poor. It also discusses how requests for different types of commodities originated in Bangladesh. It makes recommendations both as regards the commodity composition of such aid in the future, and the ways in which it should be administered and monitored. (Chr. Michelsen Inst.)
