; The aim of this paper is to study two aspects of the US president Barack Obama's rhetoric on the April 2013 Boston attacks: the first one, the arguments in the public remarks and speeches he gave after the attacks; the second one, the use of his Twitter account on the days after the explosions. The research has been done trough the textual content analysis of Obama's addresses and tweets and it has resulted in at least three noteworthy conclusions: first, Obama's rhetoric on the attacks presents the main characteristics of the US presidential rhetoric on the war on terror, not only in depicting the enemy but especially in presenting the US and the American society; second, after studying how these arguments are translated to the social media and specifically to Twitter, we see that the use of Twitter is merely limited to the reproduction of textual sentences that the president had already said; therefore, in this case social media is used as a mere disseminator of information already given to the public through mainstream media; third, the main use of Twitter by the president in the days following the attacks aimed to mobilize and encourage his followers to take active action on a substantially different political cause: in this case, the campaign for a stricter gun control.

Trump vs. media. Treatment of the press from the US president's Twitter account. This article examines President Donald Trump's treatment on Twitter towards the US media during his first six months in office, from January 20 to July 20, 2017. Based on a content analysis of the tweets published in the account @realDonaldTrump, we study the mentions to the media and their tone, and the presence and use of keywords related to the media. In addition, we analyze Trump's treatment of the press in relation to political control and the role of journalism as watchdog of democracy. As main conclusions it is noted that Trump, in a very simplistic way, praises those media that treat him positively and criticizes those that –in his view- portrait him negatively, which are often dubbed as fake news. Through this process, Trump avoids the mediator role of the media and rejects the watchdog role that democratic systems have attributed to them.

Populism is a phenomenon that has been acquiring great relevance over recent years in the US and Europe. Literature on the subject has identified the existence of a populist style that also affects political communication. The aim of this article is to analyze the structure of issues and the functions of messages circulated by a populist party in order to determine the presence and incidence of this style's main components. The methodology is based on a quantitative analysis of the content of the Twitter profiles of the Spanish political party Podemos and its leader, Pablo Iglesias, during the 2016 Spanish elections. Totally, 2,612 tweets were analyzed. The results allow the identification of a strategy of complementarity, which appears as a new component in the communication style of populism in the digital environment. Podemos is also seen to lean towards antielitism and its leader towards the communicative construction of "the people."

What is the opinion held by the European press on the U.S. election campaign and the candidates running for president? What are the predominant issues that attract the attention of European print media? Does Europe detest Donald Trump? The objective of the present study is to analyze the perception European commentators had of the 2020 race for the White House. The media, the audience, and European governments were captivated more than ever before by how the U.S. election campaign unfolded, fixing their gaze on the contest between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Through a combined quantitative and qualitative methodology, a combination of content analysis and the application of framing theory (hitherto scarcely applied to opinion pieces), our research centers on exploring the views, opinions, and analyses published in eight leading newspapers from four European countries (France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom) as expressed in their editorials and opinion articles. This study observes how the televised presidential debates were commented on, interpreted, and assessed by commentators from the eight newspapers we selected. The goal was to identify the common issues and frames that affected European public opinion on the U.S. presidential campaign and the aspirants to the White House.
