The literature on wetlands mostly concerns a limited number of "emblematic" natural spaces and neglects the existence of a large number of small wetlands, which are rarely mentioned when not outright forgotten. The needs of the regionnal planning in the urbanized regions modify appreciably the outlook of land planners on the latter areas, because they become the support of projects which fit within the framework of the Sustainable development. This situation calls for a renewal of classic approaches and analytical tools, such as used in the context of the National Research Programme into wetlands. Through the examples of the Guînes marsh, the Sensée valleys and the Haute Deûle (Nord-Pas de Calais), the point is less to characterise and circumscribe wetlands, and to understand how they work, than to define and examine the human interventions, past and present, and their effects on spaces and landscapes. Research was therefore articulated around two main investigations: - the first is a historical study of the successive states of the landscape and of the relationships between society and its environment. The approach consisted in reconstructing past land covers from archival documents and aerial photographs, - the second is a study of what is currently at stake in wetlands and how they are being appropriated by local and regional public policies. Those marshes used to be characterized, until recent time, by contradictory evolutions, their present integration into the regional urban landscape is gradually erasing their differences and could compromise their future as natural spaces. In the long run, what is the possible evolution of these suburban wetlands? ; La littérature sur les zones humides porte le plus souvent sur un nombre restreint d'espaces naturels « emblématiques » ; à côté de ceux-ci, il existe cependant un grand nombre de petites zones humides, peu citées voire oubliées. Les besoins de l'aménagement du territoire dans les régions urbanisées modifient sensiblement le regard porté sur ces zones humides oubliées, car elles deviennent le support de projets qui s'insèrent dans le cadre du Développement Durable. Ceci incite à renouveler les approches et les outils d'analyse utilisés classiquement, par exemple dans le cadre du Programme National de Recherche sur les Zones Humides. A travers les exemples des marais de Guînes, vallées de la Sensée et de la Haute Deûle (Nord-Pas de Calais), notre propos est moins de caractériser, délimiter les zones humides et d'en comprendre le fonctionnement, que de définir et d'examiner les interventions humaines, passées et actuelles, et leurs effets sur les espaces et les paysages. Notre travail s'est organisé autour de deux principales investigations : - la première est une étude historique des états paysagers et des rapports entre la société et son milieu. La démarche a consisté à reconstruire à partir de documents d'archives et de photographies aériennes les occupations du sol passées, - la seconde est une étude des enjeux et de l'appropriation actuelle des zones humides par les politiques publiques régionales et locales. Ces marais se caractérisaient jusqu'à une époque récente par des évolutions contradictoires, leur insertion actuelle dans le paysage régional urbain gomme leurs différences et pourrait compromettre leur avenir en tant qu'espaces naturels. International audience ; Artificial light at night (ALAN) is nowadays recognized as a major anthropogenic pressure on the environment on a global scale and as such is called light pollution. Through its attractive or deterrent effects, and its disruption of the biological clock for many animal and plant taxa, ALAN is increasingly recognized as a major threat to global biodiversity, which ultimately alters the amount, the quality, and the connectivity of available habitats for taxa. Biodiversity conservation tools should, therefore, include ALAN spatial and temporal effects. The ecological network, i.e., the physical and functional combination of natural elements that promote habitat connectivity, provides a valuable framework for that purpose. Understood as a social-ecological framework, it offers the opportunity to take into account the multiple uses of nocturnal spaces and times, by humans and nonhumans alike. Here we present the concept of "dark ecological network." We show this concept is able to grasp the effects of ALAN in terms of habitat disturbances and integrates temporal dimensions of ecological processes into biodiversity conservation planning. Moreover, it is also intended to trivialize the practices of darkness protection by turning them into the ordinary practices of land use planning. From an operational point of view, the challenge is to translate the levers for reducing ALAN-induced effects into a political method for its "territorialization." To achieve this objective, we propose a course of action that consists of building an interdisciplinary repertoire of contextualized knowledge (e.g., impacts on wildlife, human/lightscape relationship, existing legal tools, etc.), in order to deduce from it a number of practical supports for the governance of the dark ecological network in response to societal and ecological issues.
