Mining is an industry activity very important but pollutes the environment through exposure to its wastewater containing toxic heavy metals like mercury, which contaminates the water, soil, and the animal and plant wildlife. Therefore, there is a need to minimize or removal this heavy metal from the mine effluents. One eco-friendly and sustainable technology of toxic heavy metal removal is phytoremediation. The objective of this research is to evaluate the performance of the aquatic macrophyte water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) in a constructed wetland with subsurface flow for phytoremediation of a real mining wastewater containing mercury. The study was done in two phases: i) transplant and acclimatization of the plants which lasted 24 days, and ii) phytoremediation of mining effluent about 7 months. The plants responded positively to environment. Moreover, mercury initial concentration for contaminated effluent was 0.325 mg/L. This value is high enough to exceed the permissible limit (0.002 mg/L) stipulated by Colombian legislation for discharge of meaning wastewater into surface water, however, the plants effectively removed up to ï¾ 71% of Hg from the contaminated water. Most of the mercury removal occurred during the first month. It was not possible further Hg reductions to drinking water standards (0.001 mg/L), however, considering the high removal efficiencies of Hg by these aquatic macrophytes, these plants can be recommended for fast removal of mercury in the initial stage of water body remediation.

; The rural development is maybe one of the largest issues of agroecology, in Colombia it involves the social and armed conkflict emanated by the war for lands. This topic has taken importance at the interior of the negotiation agenda of the peace dialogues between the national government and the "FARC-EP". However, for decades it has been developing and documenting experiences around this topic, some of them of great importance and common to academic and politic stages, like those that deal with the peasant colonization, particularly with the peasant reserve zones "Zonas de Reserva Campesina (ZRC)", that are consigned in the law 160 of 1994 and are a proposal of the peasant communities like a figure of zoning, started in a historic context of agrarian struggles since middle of XIX century at colonization zones. Nowadays this is the center of the debate, not only by its nature but by the scope that has on the search for peace.

; [eng] In the middle of 1982, after several years of military dictatorship, Argentina began the transition to democracy. This led, as well as the comeback to constitutional and parliamentary normality, to significant changes in all spheres of life. Education, regarded as one the key elements of this process in the medium and long term, played an active role in these changes. Thus, the process of democratisation, normalisation and modernisation of educational institutions started, ranging from elementary to university studies, including popular education and other means of training and attention were addressed to the most vulnerable and unprivileged population sectors. The study, which delves into the aforementioned issues, although from the perspective of the history of mentalities, is the result of a first phase of a broader research that aims to clarify the political, ideological and pedagogical views of public opinion with regard to education during the transition processes to democracy in Spain and Argentina. It also outlines the idea of education held by the average citizen, which was settled in the collective imaginations of these territories. This paper accurately defines and describes the documentary sources used (in this case editorials, opinion articles, fixed sections, interviews and articles on education published in Argentina in the most important national newspapers such as Clarín, La Nación and La Prensa, and during the period of transition. We also offer an approach to the profile of columnists and editorialists and an overview of issues relating to education on which daily press focused and that, somehow, centred public debate. The work is closed by which is perhaps the main contribution, a detailed account of documentary sources, still unexplored. This Accepted Manuscript is available for reuse under a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 licence after the 12 month embargo period provided that all the terms of the licence are adhered to ; The effect of the oxidation of gallium nanoparticles (Ga NPs) on their plasmonic properties is investigated. Discrete dipole approximation has been used to study the wavelength of the out-of-plane localized surface plasmon resonance in hemispherical Ga NPs, deposited on silicon substrates, with oxide shell (Ga2O3) of different thickness. Thermal oxidation treatments, varying temperature and time, were carried out in order to increase experimentally the Ga2O3 shell thickness in the NPs. The optical, structural and chemical properties of the oxidized NPs have been studied by spectroscopic ellipsometry, scanning electron microscopy, grazing incidence x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A clear redshift of the peak wavelength is observed, barely affecting the intensity of the plasmon resonance. A controllable increase of the Ga2O3 thickness as a consequence of the thermal annealing is achieved. In addition, simulations together with ellipsometry results have been used to determine the oxidation rate, whose kinetics is governed by a logarithmic dependence. These results support the tunable properties of the plasmon resonance wavelength in Ga NPs by thermal oxidation at low temperatures without significant reduction of the plasmon resonance intensity ; This research is supported by the MINECO (CTQ2014-53334-C2-2-R and MAT2016-80394-R) and Comunidad de Madrid (NANOAVANSENS ref. __Abstract__ We introduce this special issue by explaining seven characteristics of land grabbing in Latin America. These features are not unique to the region. By highlighting them – arguing, for instance, that a key aspect in Latin America is intra-regional land grabbing driven by (trans)Latina companies – we hope to inspire new cross-regional comparisons to understand the dynamics of "global" land grabbing. Our focus on Latin America challenges some problematic generalisations in the literature, for instance, that land grabs occur mainly in fragile states. We interrogate the relationship between land grabbing and the "foreignisation" narrative, and the need to revisit the broader question of land concentration. Thus we build upon the literature locating land grabs and the land question within the political economy of global capitalism.
