Abstract – At present, the world economy is experiencing major technical and economic changes. In the field of rail transport, the challenge is the implementation of information and communication technologies, i.e. the incorporation of Industry 4.0 elements into the operation of rail transport. An important part of this is their mutual global integration. The aim of the article is to economically assess the introduction of the Industry 4.0 element of the wagon control unit into the transport process in rail transport. The premise of the research task is based on the experience of implementing intelligent sensors in rail freight transport in some countries of the European Union. Based on the analysis of the use of information and communication technologies in rail transport, an economic evaluation of the design of the wagon control unit will be carried out in the article. The article presents themethodology proposalof comprehensive evaluation of the providedservices quality inregional passenger rail transport. The proposed methodology of the quality evaluation can be used for comparing the integrated transport systems by the quality level. It can be utilized as an evaluation of the provided services in the relationship with the submitter and the supplier as well. The methodologyproposal fully accept the transport policy of the EU, specifically the White Paper 2011 – The Roadmap to a Single European Transportation Area - Towards a competitive and Resourceful efficient transport system, that are also included in the quality norms and transportation operational programme in Horizon 2020.

Rail transport has a crucial role to play not only in the EU's strategy for a sustainable transport sector, but also in terms of economic and social cohesion. It contributes significantly to the mix of transport modes in the EU, while providing clean mobility and a high degree of efficiency. Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the volume of passenger and freight rail transport has fallen sharply due to constraints and lower demand for transport. Several players in the rail market had to close down. Rail operators had to face a sharp decline in transport services. In 2020, the demand for passenger transport was significantly lower than in the previous year. Thus, railway undertakings were not able to pay the charges for access to the railway infrastructure during the emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Infrastructure managers had the opportunity to temporarily reduce, waive or defer these charges. The negative economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic could reduce or significantly endanger their financial viability for market stakeholders. Reducing charges for access to railway infrastructure is just one of the few measures that will help railway undertakings to function better. The paper focuses on the analysis of the impact of the pandemic and the implemented measures on the passenger rail sector in the Slovak Republic and on the development of rail passenger and freight transport during the pandemic. It summarizes the proposed measures against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in rail transport in Slovakia.

Ecological and sustainable modes of transport should be the main modes of transport of goods. Promotion of railway freight transport is a key element of the EU policy. It is important to have an appropriate transport infrastructure to ensure sustainable competitive railway transport. It is able to ensure the most flexible mobility of the goods with the most advantageous parameters. This article analyses the current status as well the level of achievement of the objectives set by the European Commission. The article also deals with the established nine corridors for international railway freight transport. The aim is to introduce different measures that should help increase the efficiency and competitiveness of railway freight transport in the European countries under CIM transportation mode. When designing new corridors, it is necessary to analyse and optimize the current railway network. Optimization solutions are used to analyse the network analysis methods. In particular, the critical path method (CPM) and the critical chain method (CCM) are used.
