[ES]Recientemente se detectó un nuevo sitio militar romano en Galicia, un área donde la presencia del ejército había sido difícil de rastrear hasta la fecha. O Penedo dos Lobos es un campamento en forma de naipe con entradas fortificadas muy distintivas. El estudio arqueológico realizado en este sitio en el verano de 2018 nos permitió recuperar algunos elementos de militaria romana, así como pruebas numismáticas que datan de finales del siglo I a. C. que sugieren una conexión con las guerras cántabro-astures de la época de Augusto. Sin embargo, aún existe cierta incertidumbre sobre la tarea específica que llevó a cabo el contingente militar que ocupó este sitio. Además de sus implicaciones históricas y arqueológicas, nos centraremos en detalle en la metodología aplicada en el estudio de este sitio. Esto nos ha permitido arrojar nueva luz sobre la presencia militar romana en Galicia, permitiendo su integración en los debates europeos más amplios sobre la conquista y la expansión romana.

[GA]Apresenza militar romana de época temperá (séculos II a.C. - I d.C.) na actual provincia de Ourense era ata hai pouco practicamente descoñecida. Os estudos sobre o exército romano nesta zona concentrábanse fundamentalmente no forte romano de Aquis Querquennis (Bande, Ourense), cuxa ocupación se data en torno ao último cuarto do século I d. C. e inicios do II d. C. (Rodríguez Colmenero & Ferrer Sierra 2006; Puente et al. 2018), nunha cronoloxía moi posterior á conquista romana do territorio galaico. Nos últimos anos, grazas ao incremento da dixitalización da arqueoloxía coa introdución de novas técnicas de teledetección, desde o noso colectivo de investigación, Romanarmy.eu, puidemos localizar un conxunto de novos sitios militares romanos de carácter temporal na provincia de Ourense (Figura 1) (Costa-García et al. 2017, 2019). Estes sitios caracterízanse por unha materialidade de escasa entidade e pola pouca expresión das súas estruturas sobre o terreo (Peralta Labrador 2002). Deste xeito, só foi posible identificalos a través do uso das técnicas de teledetección de recente desenvolvemento, coma o LiDAR aéreo (Costa-García & Fonte 2017), que permite recoñecer o terreo baixo as densas cubertas vexetais do Noroeste. De forma xenérica, estes recintos cobren un abanico temporal entre o século II a.C. e inicios do século I d.C., un período histórico para o cal apenas dispoñiamos de datos arqueolóxicos sobre a presenza militar romana

Traditionally, the study of the Roman military presence in Galicia (Spain) and Northern Portugal has been based on the fragmentary documentation offered by Greek and Latin authors or epigraphy, with archaeology occupying a very secondary place in these historical narratives. In particular, the information is very scarce for the period between the 2 century BCE and 1 century CE, when these territories were conquered and integrated into the Roman world. This work presents new Roman military sites discovered through an integrated methodology involving an intensive application of remote sensing techniques in order to provide information to foster a paradigm shift in this field of study. En los últimos años hemos asistido a un incremento exponencial del número de evidencias arqueológicas relacionadas con la presencia del ejército romano en el noroeste peninsular. En este trabajo analizamos un conjunto de recintos identificados en el oriente gallego mediante el empleo de una metodología específica que aúna técnicas de teledetección y métodos de prospección arqueológica convencional. Estos yacimientos podrían identificarse como asentamientos militares romanos, de acuerdo con sus particulares características morfo-tipológicas. En las siguientes líneas se describen las estructuras arqueológicas documentadas, se analiza su patrón de asentamiento y se estudian sus relaciones con el territorio circundante con la ayuda de diversas tecnologías de información geográfica.

However, the impetus given to the discipline in recent decades also requires a significant renovation of its methodological approaches. In this paper, we present a low-cost methodology combining historical and modern aerial photography, satellite imagery, airborne LiDAR, GIS and conventional archaeological field survey techniques. These tools not only provide a new and qualitatively differential approach to archaeology, but also allow the study of the sites from a diachronic perspective. Our aim in this paper is to test the potential and limitations of these techniques in the specific study of several early Roman camps, a type of settlement characterized by the perishable nature of its structures and the shortage of material findings associated to them. The following text details a research experience in Archaeology from the margins of the Academy, where it is also possible to articulate a scientific, self-managed project on the basis of a rigorous work although lacking external funding. Our intention is to disclose the Romanarmy.eu project in the context of the EAA, after our participation at the 22nd Annual Meeting which took place in Vilnius in September 2016.

International Congress of Roman Frontier Studies (23rd, 2015, Ingolstadt, Alemania) ; Since the last decade of the 20th century, Roman military archaeology in Spain has been revolutionized. In this period methodology has evolved and several sites have been discovered, mainly in the northern section of the River Duero basin and in the mountainous areas of Cantabria and Asturias.
