12 páginas, 5 figuras, 5 tablas. ; The aim of the present study was to investigate the relative importance of flooding- and confinement-related environmental features in explaining macroinvertebrate trait structure and diversity in a pool of wetlands located in a Mediterranean river floodplain. To test hypothesized trait-environment relationships, we employed a recently implemented statistical procedure, the fourth-corner method. We found that flooding-related variables, mainly pH and turbidity, were related to traits that confer an ability of the organism to resist flooding (e.g., small body-shape, protection of eggs) or recuperate faster after flooding (e.g., short life-span, asexual reproduction). In contrast, confinement-related variables, mainly temperature and organic matter, enhanced traits that allow organisms to interact and compete with other organisms (e.g., large size, sexual reproduction) and to efficiently use habitat and resources (e.g., diverse locomotion and feeding strategies). These results are in agreement with predictions made under the River Habitat Templet for lotic ecosystems, and demonstrate the ability of the fourth-corner method to test hypothesis that posit traitenvironment relationships. Trait diversity was slightly higher in flooded than in confined sites, whereas trait richness was not significantly different. 28 páginas, 4 figuras, 3 tablas. ; [EN]Ecosystem metabolism is an important measure of wetland restoration efficiency, and serves to indicate if the system is capable of processing energetic resources. Despite its value, ecosystem metabolism has rarely been included in monitoring programs. In this study, we aimed to achieve the following objectives: (i) compare net ecosystem production (NEP) rates of constructed vs. natural wetlands; (ii) identify the highest NEP rate habitats; and (iii) define the main environmental factors regulating NEP in different wetland types. Pelagic and benthic NEP rates and physicochemical features were measured in three natural and five constructed wetlands in the middle Ebro River floodplain (NE Spain). Statistical analyses showed pelagic NEP rates peaked in natural wetlands, which produced up to 187.5 mg C m−3 h−1 compared to lower rates in constructed wetlands (up to 46.2 mg C m−3 h−1). Pelagic NEP responded positively to temperature, total dissolved solids, and nutrients. Benthic NEP rates were 3 to 30-fold greater than pelagic in natural (up to 994.9 mg C m−3 h−1) and constructed (up to 1,551.5 mg C m−3 h−1) wetlands, and were heavily influenced by habitat type, with NEP peaking in areas dominated by submerged vegetation and fine organic sediment. Rapid recovery in aquatic communities (i.e. macroinvertebrate diversity) has been previously reported for the studied wetlands; however, our study suggests a slower recovery of functional processes (i.e. pelagic NEP) in constructed habitats. 16 páginas, 7 figuras, 4 tablas.-- El documento en word es la versión post-print. ; The hydroperiod, flooded sediments and riparian understory were examined for eight riparian wetlands of one Ebro River reach (NE Spain) to relate river-floodplain interactions at different spatio-temporal scales with wetland strucuture. This analysis served as a basis for assessing the ecological status of the study reach and proposing a valid restoration plan. A comparison of water-level fluctuations in riparian wetlands with that in the river channel during an ordinary flood was use to characterize the hydroperiod. This characterization was further linked with the results of a multivariate analysis performed using sediment physico-chemistry. Moreover, different measures of understory diversity were used to estimate the successional stage of eight riparian wetlands located in the same reach of the Ebro River. We described four hydroperiod types from the examined flood, from disconnected oxbow lakes to backflow channels fluctuating in concert with the Ebro River. Also three types of sediment differ in their organic matter content. Both results were closely related reflecting the dominance of endogenous or allogeneous processes. However, such heterogeneity was interpreted as being variable over longer spatiotemporal scales. In addition, the riverscape was found to be homogenous and dominated by wetlands at mature successional stages. Consequently, the lack of erosive floods within the reach seems to make inclusion of ecological restoration of geomorphological dynamics a highly appropriate management objective. 13 páginas, 6 figuras, 4 tablas. ; [EN]: In Spring of 2005, the relationships between the physical and chemical characteristics of the aquatic and benthic environments and macroinvertebrate assemblages in seven wetlands representative of the floodplain of the Middle Ebro River (NE Spain), were analyzed. The selected wetlands differed in their hydrological connectivity, local environmental conditions and anthropic influence. Through multivariate analyses, two environmental gradients and three main wetland groups were detected. The hydrological connectivity differences generate a heterogenous landscape of structurally and functionally different wetlands in the Ebro Middle floodplain. Confined wetlands, such as older ox bow lakes, showed higher salt and organic matter contents and lower macroinvertebrates' density and biodiversity than did the other wetlands. This suggests that confinement and lack of disturbance events have led to water salinization and eutrophication, habitat homogenization and natural succession of the communities towards more adapted structures with lower biodiversity. Wetlands that still maintain some functional relationship with the river, such as newer ox bow lakes, constructed wetlands, and backwaters, show a higher inorganic nutrient concentration and suspended solids. They also show higher taxa richness and evenness, which suggests that higher disturbance frequencies enhance habitat's heterogeneity and resource availability, and therefore primary and secondary production that allow adapted and opportunistic species to coexist. The progressive flow regulation tends to homogenise this complex system, endangering its conservation. Therefore, the key processes identified here should be taken under consideration for the planning and execution of ecological monitoring, management and restoration. ; [ES]: Enfoque preliminar para entender los humedales riparianos en la llanura media del Ebro (NE, Spain): características estructurales y dinámica funcional En primavera de 2005 se analizaron las relaciones entre las caracteríssticas físicas y químicas de los medios acuático y bentónico, y la comunidad de macroinvertebrados de 7 humedales representativos de la llanura de inundación del río Ebro (NE de España) en su tramo medio. Los humedales seleccionados se diferenciaron por su grado de conectividad hídrica, condiciones ambientales locales e influencia antrópica. Mediante análisis multivariante, se localizaron dos gradientes ambientales y tres tipos de humedales principales. Las diferencias de conectividad hidrológica generan un mosaico heterogéneo de humedales con diferente estructura y función en la llanura de inundación del Ebro Medio. Los humedales confinados ¿como los meandros abandonados más antiguos¿ mostraron mayor contenido de sales y materia orgánica, y menor densidad y diversidad de macroinvertebrados que el resto de humedales. Esto sugiere que el confinamiento y la falta de eventos de perturbación han conducido a la salinización y eutrofización del agua, la homogeneización del hábitat y la sucesión natural de las comunidades hacia estructuras más adaptadas y de menor diversidad. [The definitive version is available at www3.interscience.wiley.com] ; [EN] Despite a general recognition that benthic macroinvertebrates respond to changes in hydrological connectivity within floodplain ecosystems, no consensus about patterns in community structure and ecosystem processes across large scales and different climates has yet been established. Such knowledge is necessary since anthropogenic activities continue to alter the natural hydrogeomorphology of large floodplains, with most consequences for aquatic communities remaining unknown. Using information from six large rivers located in four different climate regions (humid subtropical, maritime temperate, Mediterranean and dry semi-arid), we compared benthic macroinvertebrate responses along lateral gradients of hydrological connectivity. We tested hypotheses related to differences among climate regions and to similar hydrological constraints within any one climate. The large geographical scale covered by this study provides the first comprehensive comparison of aquatic community patterns across hydrological gradients under different climatic settings. Multivariate ordinations demonstrated a higher overlap of trait community composition (50% variance explained by the first two axes) than taxonomic composition (15%) among floodplains, displaying high interclimate trait stability. The taxonomy-based ordination separated the subtropical floodplain, with an average 86% of non-insect taxa, from the insect-dominated temperate, Mediterranean and semi-arid floodplains (with >50% insect abundance). In the trait-based ordination, large body size (60% of organisms >4 cm) and long lifespan duration (80% of organisms) discriminated the subtropical from the other five studied floodplains. Across a gradient of lateral connectivity, linear mixed effect (LME) models supported seven of 15 hypotheses, which suggests remarkably consistent macroinvertebrate patterns in floodplains regardless of the climate regime. Taxon and trait richness were positively related and peaked at sites of intermediate hydrological connectivity. Our predictions about the feeding guilds of macroinvertebrates (e.g. that shredders and scrapers would be more abundant in connected channels, and predators and deposit feeders at isolated sites) were more strongly supported by the data than those about life history (e.g. plurivoltinism and short lifespan would be better represented in connected channels). This difference was related to the influence of extended periods of hydrological disconnection as disturbance in addition to flooding. Trait stability across hydrological connectivity provides a meaningful ecological context for the comparison of the macroinvertebrate benthos among climatic zones, where taxonomic composition differs strongly. In addition, trait similarities and dissimilarities found in this study suggest that large-scale biogeographical filters do operate on communities, resulting in different trait combinations in temperate and Mediterranean floodplains when compared to semi-arid and subtropical environments. This is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license. ; Despite the exponential increase in human population at global scale, some rural areas have experienced a progressive abandonment over the last decades. Under particular socioecological and policy contexts, changes in demography may promote land-use changes and, consequently, alter ecosystem services (ES) supply. However, most studies on this topic have targeted urban population increase, whereas depopulation has been rarely addressed. Here, we examined how shifts in demographic variables (human population, population density, and number of villages) affect provisioning (water supply, food and biomass production) and regulating (soil retention, water and nutrient regulation) ES in Mediterranean rural areas with contrasting environmental, socioeconomic and land-use contexts. When depopulation results in underuse of socio-ecological systems, we expected a decrease of provisioning and an increase of regulating ES, whereas we expected the opposite pattern when it results in land-use intensification. To test this hypothesis, we compared demographic data and ES estimated with Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) linked to land-use changes between the 1950s and 2000s in three rural areas of Aragón (NE Spain). Generalized Additive Mixed Models and Linear Mixed-Effect Models were used to analyze demographic trends, ES changes and the relationship between them. We found severe depopulation (−42% inhabitants) and associated land-use changes in the three areas, which was particularly evident in isolated mountainous zones (−63% inhabitants). Depopulation trends significantly affected land use and, consequently, all of the ES evaluated. In mountainous depopulated areas, land abandonment and rewilding resulted in the increase in water regulation (>1000%) and soil retention (>400%). In contrast, agriculture was intensified in more fertile and easy-to-access lowland areas, boosting the food production service (>600%). Accordingly, the interactions among depopulation, crop production and regulating ES should be considered in the management schemes and policies targeting rural areas for a balanced and sustainable supply of ES in the long term. ; This study, which is part of the Ecological Restoration Research Group (E40-17R) work, was funded by Aragón Government, Dpt. 1. Effective prevention and control of invasive species generally relies on a comprehensive, coherent and representative list of species that enables resources to be used optimally. European Union (EU) Regulation 1143/2014 on invasive alien species (IAS) aims to control or eradicate priority species, and to manage pathways to prevent the introduction and establishment of new IAS; it applies to species considered of Union concern and subject to formal risk assessment. So far, 49 species have been listed but the criteria for selecting species for risk assessment have not been disclosed and were probably unsystematic. 2. We developed a simple method to systematically rank IAS according to their maximum potential threat to biodiversity in the EU. We identified 1,323 species as potential candidates for listing, and evaluated them against their invasion stages and reported impacts, using information from databases and scientific literature. 3. 900 species fitted the criteria for listing according to IAS Regulation. We prioritised 207 species for urgent risk assessment, 59 by 2018 and 148 by 2020, based on their potential to permanently damage native species or ecosystems; another 336 species were identified for a second phase (by 2025), to prevent or reverse their profound impacts on biodiversity; and a further 357 species for assessment by 2030. 4. Policy implications. We propose a systematic, proactive approach to selecting and prioritising IAS for risk assessment to assist European Union policy implementation. We assess an unprecedented number of species with potential to harm EU biodiversity using a simple methodology and recommend which species should be considered for risk assessment in a ranked order of priority along the timeline 2018– 2030, based on their maximum reported impact and their invasion history in Europe ; Peer reviewed

New technologies present novel opportunities and challenges, and globalisation has created new pathways and increased the speed, volume and routes by which organisms can spread. The UK Biological Security Strategy (2018) acknowledges the importance of research on biological security in the UK. Given the breadth of potential research, a targeted agenda identifying the questions most critical to effective and coordinated progress in different disciplines of biological security is required. We used expert elicitation to generate 80 policy-relevant research questions considered by participants to have the greatest impact on UK biological security. Drawing on a collaboratively-developed set of 450 questions, proposed by 41 experts from academia, industry and the UK government (consulting 168 additional experts) we subdivided the final 80 questions into six categories: bioengineering; communication and behaviour; disease threats (including pandemics); governance and policy; invasive alien species; and securing biological materials and securing against misuse. Initially, the questions were ranked through a voting process and then reduced and refined to 80 during a one-day workshop with 35 participants from a variety of disciplines. Consistently emerging themes included: the nature of current and potential biological security threats, the efficacy of existing management actions, and the most appropriate future options. The resulting questions offer a research agenda for biological security in the UK that can assist the targeting of research resources and inform the implementation of the UK Biological Security Strategy. These questions include research that could aid with the mitigation of Covid-19, and preparation for the next pandemic. We hope that our structured and rigorous approach to creating a biological security research agenda will be replicated in other countries and regions. The world, not just the UK, is in need of a thoughtful approach to directing biological security research to tackle the emerging issues.

The European Union Regulation (EU) 1143/2014 on invasive alien species (IAS) establishes an EU-wide framework for action to prevent, minimise and mitigate the adverse impacts of IAS on biodiversity and centres around the development of a list of IAS of EU Concern. The initial list of IAS of EU concern will be based on available risk assessments compliant with agreed minimum standards but horizon scanning is seen as critical to inform future updating of the list, in order to prioritise the most threatening new and emerging IAS. A workshop was held with the overarching aim of reviewing and validating an approach to horizon scanning to derive a ranked list of IAS which are likely to arrive, establish, spread and have an impact on biodiversity or related ecosystem services in the EU over the next decade. The agreed horizon scanning approach involved two distinct phases: i) Preliminary consultation between experts within five thematic groups to derive initial scores; ii) Consensus-building across expert groups including extensive discussion on species rankings coupled with review and moderation of scores across groups. The outcome of the horizon scanning was a list of 95 species, including all taxa (except microorganisms) within marine, terrestrial and freshwater environments, considered as very high or high priority for risk assessment ; Le Règlement de l'Union Européenne (UE) 1143/2014 sur les espèces notices envahissantes (EEE) établit un cadre d'actions à l'échelle européenne pour prévenir, réduire au minimum et atténuer les impacts négatifs des EEE sur la biodiversité, et se concentre sur le développement d'une liste d'EEE de préoccupation européenne. The European Union Regulation (EU) 1143/2014 on invasive alien species (IAS) establishes an EU-wide framework for action to prevent, minimise and mitigate the adverse impacts of IAS on biodiversity and centres around the development of a list of IAS of EU Concern. The initial list of IAS of EU concern will be based on available risk assessments compliant with agreed minimum standards but horizon scanning is seen as critical to inform future updating of the list, in order to prioritise the most threatening new and emerging IAS. A workshop was held with the overarching aim of reviewing and validating an approach to horizon scanning to derive a ranked list of IAS which are likely to arrive, establish, spread and have an impact on biodiversity or related ecosystem services in the EU over the next decade. The agreed horizon scanning approach involved two distinct phases: i) Preliminary consultation between experts within five thematic groups to derive initial scores; ii) Consensus-building across expert groups including extensive discussion on species rankings coupled with review and moderation of scores across groups. The outcome of the horizon scanning was a list of 95 species, including all taxa (except microorganisms) within marine, terrestrial and freshwater environments, considered as very high or high priority for risk assessment ; Le Règlement de l'Union Européenne (UE) 1143/2014 sur les espèces notices envahissantes (EEE) établit un cadre d'actions à l'échelle européenne pour prévenir, réduire au minimum et atténuer les impacts négatifs des EEE sur la biodiversité, et se concentre sur le développement d'une liste d'EEE de préoccupation européenne. The list comprises species known to pose great threats to biodiversity and needs to be maintained and updated. Horizon scanning is seen as critical to identify the most threatening potential IAS that do not yet occur in Europe to be subsequently risk assessed for future listing. Accordingly, we present a systematic consensus horizon scanning procedure to derive a ranked list of potential IAS likely to arrive, establish, spread and have an impact on biodiversity in the region over the next decade. The approach is unique in the continental scale examined, the breadth of taxonomic groups and environments considered, and the methods and data sources used. International experts were brought together to address five broad thematic groups of potential IAS. For each thematic group the experts first independently assembled lists of potential IAS not yet established in the EU but potentially threatening biodiversity if introduced. Experts were asked to score the species within their thematic group for their separate likelihoods of i) arrival, ii) establishment, iii) spread, and iv) magnitude of the potential negative impact on biodiversity within the EU. Experts then convened for a 2-day workshop applying consensus methods to compile a ranked list of potential IAS. From an initial working list of 329 species, a list of 66 species not yet established in the EU that were considered to be very high (8 species), high (40 species) or medium (18 species) risk species was derived. Here, we present these species highlighting the potential negative impacts and the most likely biogeographic regions to be affected by these potential IAS
