The election of Ferrol as the headquarters of the Maritime Department of Northern Spain in 1726 converted this small fishing village in Galicia into mainland Spain's principal arsenal and shipyard. In order to guarantee its protection, a permanent concern for the Crown, engineers and seamen performed surveys and studies of the Galician coast with a view to establishing a system of coastal defenses. This was then followed by the construction of castles and batteries, in addition to watchtowers from which to monitor the coast and keep Ferrol informed of any developments by means of beacons. In the following pages, this system will be examined in order to determine its quality, efficiency, and state of repair during the eighteenth century, thus revealing the huge disparity between theory and practice. For, as with the rest of the Galician coast, Ferrol was continuously at the mercy of Spain's enemies throughout the century.

[Resumen] En la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII Ferrol, una pequeña población costera del Noroeste, se transforma en un importante centro demográfico, tecnológico e industrial naval por la decisión en 1726 de que allí se ubicara la capital del Departamento Marítimo del Norte. Para poder desempeñar todas las funciones que conllevaban esta condición fue preciso construir un arsenal, un astillero y una ciudad. Todos estos elementos pivotan sobre el espacio marino en el que se debían resguardar los navíos de línea de la flota: la dársena. Analizamos los trabajos que se llevaron a cabo para moldear el fondo de la ría de Ferrol y permitir que el corazón del arsenal reuniera las características exigidas por los ingenieros, así como el papel desempeñado por los principales protagonistas que intervinieron en esta empresa durante cincuenta años. ; [Abstract] This paper analyses the specific schedule of translation conducted by the Abreu family in the early Hispanic Enlightenment. The program may seem like an insignificant element in the face of the flood of translations in that context. However, what this text argues is that on the contrary it was very new in terms of the political languages and no less indicative for the survival in the Hispanic culture, despite the flood of selective capacities in the practice of translation. New, because it constituted the most ambitious attempt to explore the possibility of receiving a discourse that since the middle of the previous century had presented the interest of the states as the effective sovereigns of the international order. In addition, it was indicative for the validity of selective capacities in the deployment of translation, because the root that infused the program was precisely the detection of a variant of this political rhetoric that, while enabling the monarchy to try to reverse its subsidiary position in the Utrecht order, was consistent with its Catholic moral tradition. ; Trabajo realizado en el marco del Proyecto I+D de Generación de Conocimiento «Dinámicas y conflictividad en el litoral del Noroeste peninsular en la Edad Moderna» (ref. [Resumen] La España del sigloXVIII asiste al renacimiento de su política naval con la creación de importantes infraestructuras militares (arsenales) e inversión tecnológica (navíos de línea). Sin embargo, por lo que respecta al ámbito costero desde la óptica civil, el análisis del estado de los puertos que no tenían un estricto interés estratégico y militar, es decir, los comerciales y pesqueros, se aprecia una situación en la que se alternan la destrucción y el deterioro con las reiteradas peticiones de los gremios de marineros para mejorar los muelles, diques y construcciones anexas. En Asturias podemos afirmar que la práctica totalidad de las demandas de auxilio serán atendidas administrativamente (elaboración de proyectos, planificación de impuestos para sufragar las obras, frecuentes visitas de los ingenieros militares), lo que no equivale a que se ejecutaran de manera completa, perfecta o siquiera que garantizaran una perdurabilidad en el tiempo que fuera más allá de algunos lustros. ; [Abstract] In the eighteenth century Spanish naval policy experienced a renaissance with the building of important military infrastructures (arsenals) and investment in technology (ships of the line). As regards the country's coasts from a civil perspective, however, an analysis of its commercial and fishing ports, which were not strictly of any strategic or military interest, paints a picture in which their deterioration and ruination alternated with the repeated requests of the sailors' guilds for improvements to be made to quays, docks and associated outbuildings. In Asturias, it can be claimed that practically all the requests for assistance were heeded by the administration (the drafting of projects, the planning of taxes to defray building costs, the frequent visits of military engineers, etc.), although this does not mean to say that they were fully met or guaranteed their sustainability for more than a few decades

Presentamos una panorámica de la actividad intelectual de José Felipe de Olivé y un análisis del contenido del periódico que editó en Gerona durante la última fase de la guerra contra la Convención, poniéndolo en relación con los sucesos que se estaban produciendo. El Correo de Gerona nos permite acceder a una peculiar manera de propaganda «de baja intensidad», que viene marcada por las restricciones informativas impuestas por la Corona, lo que si cabe introduce un elemento de mayor diferenciación entre ambos beligerantes merced a su diverso empleo de los mecanismos de información. ; Oferim una panoràmica de l'activitat intel·lectual de José Felipe de Olivé i una anàlisi del contingut del periòdic que edità a Girona durant la darrera fase de la guerra contra la Convenció, d'acord amb els esdeveniments que es produïen a l'època. El Correo de Gerona ens permet accedir a una peculiar manera de propaganda «de baixa intensitat», marcada per les restriccions informatives imposades per la Corona, que introdueix un important element de diferenciació entre les diferents parts en conflicte, gràcies al seu divers ús dels mecanismes d'informació. ; We are showing a general view of José Felipe de Olivé's intellectual activity and an analysis of the contents of the newspaper he edited in Gerona during the last year of the war against the Convention, connecting this to the events that were taking place. The Correo de Gerona allows us to study a peculiar «low intensity» propaganda that is ruled by several informative restrictions imposed by the Crown, which, therefore, introduces an element of distinction between both belligerents, due to the diverse uses of the different mechanisms of information.
