The Topographic map of the city of Granada and its municipal district was accomplished in 1819 with accuracy and graphical quality as a pioneering work in the area of the land registries maps in Spain. It was conducted by Francisco Dalmau (1766-1824), illustrate mathematic who accomplished numerous titles ending with Headmaster of the Statistics of the Province of Granada. One year later he directed 18 maps more, corresponding to some towns and villages in Granada district. These documents are previous in some decades to other similar works done in Spanish cities. This article gives a general layout of the agrarian land of the surroundings of Granada from the global analysis of these cartographic documents and their geographic data that, in spite of have been promoted out of the military scope, are preserved in the Army's Geographic Centre. ; En 1819 se elaboró con notable precisión y calidad gráfica el Mapa topográfico de la ciudad de Granada y su término, obra pionera en el ámbito de los planos catastrales parcelarios españoles. Su autor fue Francisco Dalmau (1766-1824), matemático ilustrado que acaparó numerosos títulos, culminados con el de director de la Estadística de la Provincia de Granada. Un año más tarde dirigió la elaboración de 18 mapas más, correspondientes a los términos municipales de los lugares y villas del partido granadino. Con esta iniciativa se adelantaría en varias décadas a los trabajos de similares características realizados en otras poblaciones españolas. En este artículo se ofrece una completa visión del uso del suelo agrario en el entorno de la capital granadina a partir del análisis conjunto de los datos geográficos contenidos en estas cartografías que, pese a que fueron promovidas fuera del ámbito militar, se han conservado en el Centro Geográfico del Ejército.

[EN] The aim of this paper is to analyse the fortifications built around the Alhambra and the surrounding area during the Napoleonic invasion of Spain, studying both the physical remains, and historical maps. Analyzing these two sources we can uncover what was planned by the French Army military engineers and what was really built between 1810 and 1812. [ES] Tras las últimas investigaciones sobre el patrimonio arqueo-minero aurífero de la Provincia de Granada, en los últimos años hemos presentado diversas propuestas a las administraciones andaluzas para la catalogación e inventario del Patrimonio Paisajístico, Arquitectónico, Arqueológico y Etnológico vinculado a esta mineríasecular. El objetivo no era otro que el de preservar los "Paisajes Industriales Mineros del Oro" granadinos más importantes mediante las diversas figuras de protección contempladas en la Ley 14/2007, de 26 de noviembre, del Patrimonio Histórico de Andalucía, así como su inclusión en la Base de Datos de Patrimonio Inmueble (BDI) que forma parte del Sistema de Información del Patrimonio Histórico de Andalucía (SIPHA). En consecuencia, la Delegación de Cultura de la Junta de Andalucía en Granada ha decidido iniciar la incoación como Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) de los yacimientos arqueo-mineros auríferos granadinos más sobresalientes, como paso previo a futuras actuaciones de protección, estudio arqueológico yvalorización de las mismas. Entre las figuras de protección patrimonial que podrían aplicarse a estas minas de oro y a los yacimientos arqueológicos asociados a ellas destacarían la de "Zona Arqueológica" (artº 26.5 de la Ley 14/2007 y Decreto 168/2003). Las categorías de "Lugares de Interés Industrial" (artº 26.7), "Monumento" (artº 26.1) y "Sitio Histórico" (artº 26.4) también podrían argumentarse. Desde los orígenes hasta inicios de la Edad Moderna". ; [EN] After the latest research into the gold mining heritage of the Province of Granada, for the past several years we have presented diverse proposals to the Andalusian Government to classify and make an inventory of the Landscape, Architectonic, Archaeological and Ethnological heritage of this age-old activity, with the objective of protecting these "Gold Mining Industrial Landscapes" by means of some of the figures considered in the Andalusian Historical Heritage Law 14/2007 of 26 November, as well as their inclusion in the Real Estate Data Base (BDI) that comprises the Geographical Information System of the Andalusian Historical Heritage (SIPHA). Consequently, the Culture Delegation of the Andalusian Government in Granada has decided to initiate the process to declare these historical mines as Assets of Cultural Interest (BIC), as a first step towards future protection proceedings, archaeological study and appreciation. Among the heritage protection concepts that could be applied to these gold mines and the associated archaeological sites, the "Archaeological Zone" (article 26.5 of Law 14/2007 and Decretory 168/2003) is the most suitable. The categories of "Places of Industrial Interest" (article 26.7), "Monument" (article 26.1) and "Historical Site" (article 26.4) could also be argued. Para culminar esta empresa, los Reyes Católicos establecieron a los largo de 1491 a todos sus efectivos en la vega granadina, alojando a este contingente de tropas y bastimentos en las tiendas y chozas de un campamento militar, el Real de la Vega. In order to culminate this undertaking, throughout 1491 Ferdinand and Isabella installed all of their troops in the plain of Granada, quartering them in the tents and huts of a military encampment, the Real de la Vega. Forthwith, the construction of a city-encampment was begun as a winter garrison, the Real de Santa Fe, where some of the innovations in Spanish fortification work -in transition from the medieval to the modern- were introduced. This text, by utilizing the data contained in the carved relief of the lower choir stalls of Toledo Cathedral in which these events are represented, attemps to reveal the most significant elements of these two royal camps and how they were protected. ; Peer reviewed

Catálogo de la exposición "La arquitectura defensiva de la provincia de Málaga. Evolución del sistema defensivo a través de sus torres", realizada en la Alcazaba de Málaga entre el 17 y el 31 de octubre de 2019. ; El reino nazarí de Granada abarcó las zonas montañosas del sudeste de la Península Ibérica, donde se estableció una frontera natural con el reino de Castilla entre 1232 y 1492. Para su control y comunicación visual con los principales núcleos nazaríes se estableció una red de torres defensivas. Muchas aún subsisten diseminadas entre las provincias de Granada, Málaga, Almería, Jaén y Cádiz. A pesar de que tras la conquista castellana muchas de estas torres perdieron su utilidad defensiva, un nutrido grupo de estas, aunque con adaptaciones a las nuevas estrategias y técnicas militares como la artillería, siguieron empleándose como elementos de vigilancia y control en el territorio. Estas construcciones, dada su condición histórica como frontera de reinos y civilizaciones, se ubican en emplazamientos singulares, erigiéndose como hitos referenciales de los territorios en los que se asientan. Su diversa tipología y morfología constituyen un fiel testimonio de las distintas formas de vertebración territorial que se han sucedido a lo largo de la historia, lo que hace que no puedan ser entendidas fuera de esta dimensión. These late Islamic territories in medieval Iberia occupied the mountainous areas of the southeastern area of today's Spain. There, a natural border was established between the Nasrid kingdom and the expansion of Castile during more than two centuries and a half. To control this frontier and establish visual communication between it and the Nasrid power centres lead by the Alhambra citadel, an extensive network of watchtowers and defensive towers linked to farmsteads was constructed. These towers are located in unique sites; being erected as reference landmarks of the territories on which they stand. Tras la creación del reino Taifa de Saqura en el siglo XI, la medina de Segura de la Sierra controlaría un amplio territorio dentro de las sierras que jalonan esta zona. Ante el peligro de los ejércitos castellanos, durante los siglos XII y XIII, la capital de esta cora y las alquerías circundantes, levantaron sus propias estructuras defensivas. Después de la conquista cristiana en el siglo XIII, y dado su estratégico carácter fronterizo con los reinos musulmanes de Granada y Murcia, este área fue entregada a la Orden de Santiago, convirtiéndose la Encomienda de Segura en un lugar clave en la defensa de esta extensa comarca montañosa. De este periodo medieval todavía subsisten en el valle de Segura de la Sierra, en diferentes estados de conservación, más de dieciséis torres que estaban a menudo englobadas en un recinto fortificado. Se trata de un conjunto único de elementos de arquitectura en tapial que requiere ser investigado, conocido y preservado, constituyendo una magnífica herencia patrimonial. La oportunidad que brindan estas construcciones medievales, que en su mayoría no han sido intervenidas nunca desde su construcción, nos ha permitido conocer en la investigación realizada aspectos funcionales, tipológicos, históricos, constructivos y formales de las torres, como paso previo a establecer métodos de restauración y conservación eficaces. La significación histórica y las referencias culturales de estos elementos en relación a su implantación en el territorio así como el interés de los datos obtenidos son las principales contribuciones de este trabajo. ; With the establishment of the Taifa kingdom of Segura in the 11th century, its capital would control a wide mountainous territory in the Southeast of Spain. During the 12th and 13th centuries, faced with the threat of the Castilian armies, Segura and the surrounding qarya-s built several defensive fortresses. After the Christian conquest of this territory around 1214, Segura was donated to the Military Order of Santiago. Due to its strategic position on the border of the Islamic kingdoms of Granada and Murcia, the Encomienda of Segura was a key area for the defense of this extensive mountainous region. As a result, in this territory there are still remains of a well-preserved tower system built in the Middle Ages using rammed-earth technology, which makes up and defines the landscape of this natural area landscape. This collection of historic buildings is a unique set of defensive structures with more than sixteen towers, often with a fortified enclosure, that represents a magnificent heritage that should be investigated, known and preserved. An exhaustive analysis has been carried in these never restored before medieval buildings, with an in-depth study and survey of their functional, typological, historical, constructive and morphological features, as a previous step to apply a restoration and conservation methodology. The historical significance and cultural references of these towers with their territory, and the interest of the discoveries obtained due to the research made, are the principal contributions of this paper.

The Catholic Monarchs (Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon) besieged the cities of the last Islamic kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula during the War of Granada (1482-1492), until surrender the capital of the Nasrid dynasty, Madinat Garnata and Madina Alhambra. The military campaigns were strategically programmed. A series of cities was chosen so that their fall would cause the surrender of a part of the territory, due to a domino effect. The capture of Madinat Basta (Baza), to the extreme North of the Nasrid kingdom, was seen as an easy target by the strategists of the Catholic Monarchs. However, the battle-hardened defence of the population and the special configuration and territorial layout of the city resulted in one of the hardest sieges of the campaign, lasting from mid-June to the beginning of December, 1489. To achieve this goal they adopted a strategy that Scipio Africanus the Younger had already developed in 133 B.C., when he surrounded the Celtiberian city of Numantia. Around Baza there are archaeological remains of different structures that can be linked to this conflict. In this communication we have analysed the fortification works that could have been built during the Christian siege of 1489, on the basis of the archaeological evidence and the historical written sources. ; Universidad de Málaga. This paper is devoted to the analysis of the preserved remains of the castillo de La Peña or fortaleza Alta de Martos (Jaén), an important archaeological site with substantial standing structures. It was the main castle and headquarters of the master of the Military Order of Calatrava at the Command of Martos. Until its abandonment in the sixteenth century, this stronghold was an important Christian spot in the border territory contrary to the Nasrid kingdom of Granada between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. Besides the critical review of the existing documentation on this outstanding example of defensive medieval architecture, the fieldwork and the updated complete survey of the standing structures on the site has played a fundamental role in this analysis. The results of this research constitute an important advance in the knowledge of this Listed Building and contribute new hitherto unpublished information. The data obtained are the basis for the scientific restoration on this site. ; En este artículo se aborda el análisis de los restos conservados del castillo de La Peña o fortaleza Alta de Martos (Jaén), importante yacimiento arqueológico que presenta estructuras emergentes de envergadura. Constituyó el castillo y sede principal del maestre de la Orden de Calatrava en la encomienda de Martos, territorio fronterizo con el reino nazarí de Granada entre los siglos XIII y XV, hasta que esta fortaleza fue abandonada en el siglo XVI. Además de la revisión crítica de la documentación existente sobre este singular ejemplo de arquitectura defensiva medieval, para realizar este análisis ha resultado fundamental el trabajo de campo y la elaboración de la planimetría completa y actualizada de las estructuras conservadas. The Islamic Nasrid kingdom of Granada occupied the mountainous areas of the south-eastern area of the Iberian Peninsula. The Baetic mountain range worked as a natural frontier between the Nasrid kingdom and the Christian kingdom of Castile from 1232 to 1492. An extensive network of watchtowers was built by Nasrid to control this frontier stablishing visual communication between them and the Nasrid centre at the Alhambra citadel. Many of them are still standing, disperse through the provinces of Granada, Malaga, Almeria and the eastern parts of Jaen, Cordoba and Cadiz. Even being this military architecture protected by Spanish Heritage law, many of these medieval towers and their cultural landscapes are in severe risk. There are studies of individual towers, but any global comparative study has been developed. For this reason, within the framework of the R&D project called 'Las atalayas que defendieron el reino nazarí de Granada. Análisis y documentación científica (Nazalaya)" (HAR2016-79689-P) financed by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness of Spain, the towers are being studied as individual exemplars as well as components of the same typological group. This generates a complete documentation constituted by a homogenous and exhaustively planimetry which supplements the existing information and enabling comparative analysis. Furthermore complete architectural surveys are being carried out using techniques as photogrammetry.
