; The purpose of this article is to identify how in the daily operation of a secondary school on the periphery of Maputo (Mozambique) historical, political, social and cultural conditions are crystallized. The ethnographic study carried out in school allowed for the identification of a "cultural plot" operating inside it. Examination of the inner workings of this plot revealed how both with and without educational intentionality, the school transmits notions, ideas and values that are not always coherent with the way of life in its environment. At times the disconnect can be denigrating and reveals a lack of sensitivity and integration with the roots and heritage. The article presents some of the cultural elements that come into play and suggests among other ideas, the use and distribution of the school space as a vehicle to address this dynamic. Ethnographic study of an institution's operational architecture can offer insight and understanding that allows for transformational improvements and propositions including the active participation of the educational community as a protagonist. It is hypothesized that part of the failure (limited success) of the multitude of projects in Mozambican schools may stem from this simple lack of appropriate cultural integration. In the introduction we will examine the background and relevance of the investigation. In "Methodology" the research approach is exposed, based on the proposed ecological-cultural approach of John Ogbu (1993 [1981]).Later, the theoretical framework will be presented, based on the historical context of the phenomenon of study; the structure of economic opportunities in the environment and the model of social reality that the school exemplifies in order to arrive at an understanding of the characterization of a "cultural plot". Finally, the analysis of physical space as a vehicle of cultural notions will be presented. The results obtained will be examined and show the link as a possible explanation for school failure. The conclusion will elucidate the need for ethnography as part of the analysis of the effectiveness of educational institutions as well as the value derived from the Discipline of Anthropology of Education.
