Tra le molteplici declinazioni che investono il rapporto architettura natura un caso particolarmente pregnante è quello dei contesti vulcanici, tanto per le implicazioni che riguardano la ricerca estetica e gli aspetti visivi, quanto la costruzione e la composizione materica degli edifici realizzati in tali contesti. La fascinazione suscitata dalle eruzioni vulcaniche attraverso i secoli ha certamente contribuito alla persistenza di miti e alla formazione di un immaginario collettivo, fino alla costruzione di identità locali radicate in territori fortemente caratterizzati, con significativi riflessi anche nella sfera architettonica. Per altro verso, la disponibilità di un'ampia gamma di materiali provenienti dall'attività vulcanica (rocce basaltiche, diversi tipi e colori di lava, pomici, sabbie) ha creato specifiche opportunità per l'architettura e la costruzione più in generale. Questo contributo si propone di compiere una ricognizione sulle architetture realizzate nel comprensorio etneo in età moderna, attraverso l'intreccio di dati ricavati da fonti archivistiche e iconografiche e dall'osservazione diretta di una selezionata casistica di opere, mirata a individuare condizionamenti e opportunità provenienti dal loro sorgere "all'ombra del vulcano". L'attenzione è stata rivolta soprattutto ai grandi investimenti simbolici (cattedrali, chiese madri, palazzi del governo, palazzi aristocratici), cioè le fabbriche più impegnative per dimensioni e ambizioni rappresentative e con maggiori aspettative di resistenza e di durata. ; Among the many manifestations of the relationship between architecture and nature, a particularly significant case study is that of volcanic territories, both in terms of their implications for aesthetic research and visual considerations, and for the construction and material composition of the buildings realized out in these contexts. The fascination aroused by volcanic eruptions throughout the centuries certainly contributed to the persistence of myths and the development of a collective imaginary, resulting in the construction of local identities that are deep-rooted in the strong character of the territory itself, with significant effects in the architectural sphere as well. On the other hand, the availability of a wide range of volcanic materials (basalt, different kinds and colors of lava, pumice and sands) offered specific opportunities for architecture and construction in general. The aim of this article is to analyze architectural works built in the area of Etna during the early modern period by weaving together data drawn from archival and iconographical sources and the direct observation of select architectural case studies. The focus is on conditioning and opportunities coming from their setting "in the shadow of the volcano". Attention is paid above all to the great symbolic "investments" (cathedrals, mother churches, government and aristocratic palaces), that is, the most demanding buildings in size and with the highest expectations of resistance and durability.

The ten-year government of Ferrante Gonzaga marks a crucial time in the process of the modernization of the fortifications of the largest island in the Western Mediterranean. Previous studies have already highlighted the cornerstones of the strategy that was pursued and the projects that were undertaken in order to realize an adequate defence system. Also well-known is the extent to which the viceroy himself, as well as the royal engineer Antonio Ferramolino, participated in resolving the longstanding problem of the fortification on the island. However, important new data has emerged from recent research in the archival collections of the Tribunale del Real Patrimonio, conserved in the State Archives of Palermo. Using this largely unpublished documentation, the paper focuses on building sites started during this decade, looking at aspects related to construction as well as to organization and functioning, and on the intertwining of skills and responsibilities of the multiple actors involved in the various phases, from design to execution. The information included in the documents allows us to clarify the state of the art of fortification works undertaken in the main Sicilian cities during the period in question, providing technical and financial data, as well as information on the measures that were adopted to guarantee efficiency and promptness on the sites. Moreover, this knowledge forms a strong basis for a new analysis of the roles played by the different people involved.

In early modern Sicily the extra-urban fortified residence was a limited but important architectural phenomenon. Starting from the last decades of XV century previous residential buildings, especially towers, were in some cases renewed by the introduction of a surrounding fortified perimeter with bastions (i.e. Donjon of Adrano; tower of Migaido). The paper presents a sequence of examples most representative of the architectural phenomenon, specially focusing on the models in use; the intertwining between residential and military needs in the conformation of inside and outside spaces; finally, the relation between image strategy and practical function.

Sono trascorsi ormai trent'anni dagli importanti contributi monografici offerti da Guido Tadini sulla figura complessa e affascinante di Antonio Ferramolino da Bergamo, di certo uno dei più autorevoli ingegneri militari al servizio della monarchia spagnola nel Mediterraneo del primo Cinquecento. Sebbene gli studi più recenti, in particolar modo quelli sull'ingegnere Pietro Antonio Tomasello da Padova, suo predecessore, abbiano in parte ridimensionato quel ruolo "pionieristico" nel processo di potenziamento delle difese siciliane che la storiografia gli aveva attribuito, resta indubbio come la figura di Ferramolino offra molteplici spunti di interesse. La sua lunga attività professionale, documentata per almeno un trentennio, il suo amplissimo raggio d'azione – dai territori della Serenissima, alla Repubblica di Ragusa, alla Sicilia, da Malta ai presidi africani d'oltremare, la Goletta di Tunisi per prima –, certi accenti del suo carattere, tra cui quel fare spregiudicato che lo portò, anche grazie ad entrature a Corte, a mescolare al contempo responsabilità progettuale e intervento in qualità di impresario edile nei medesimi cantieri, sono tutti elementi che spingono, anche alla luce di nuove e corpose acquisizioni documentarie, verso un aggiornamento del suo profilo biografico e del quadro d'insieme della sua attività professionale, nell'ambito del quale si possa finalmente far luce sulle peculiarità del suo modus operandi e sulle innovazioni tecniche da lui introdotte nelle fortificazioni delle diverse sponde del Mediterraneo. ; Thirty years already went by since the publication of major monographic contributions by Guido Tadini on the complex and fascinating figure of Antonio Ferramolino from Bergamo, certainly one of the most distinguished military engineers at the service of the Spanish monarchy in the Mediterranean in the early sixteenth century. Although the most recent studies, particularly those on the engineer Pietro Antonio Tomasello from Padua, his predecessor, have partially reduced the "pioneering" role in the process of enhancement of Sicilian defenses that historiography had attributed to him, the figure of Ferramolino undoubtedly still presents many points of interest. His long professional activity, documented for at least three decades, with a very wide scope of action - from the Venetian territories, to the Republic of Ragusa and Sicily, from Malta to north African strongholds -, certain aspects of his character, including an unprejudiced behavior that led him to combine design responsibility and intervention as a building contractor in the same building site, are all elements to consider, especially in light of new documentary acquisitions, for an update of his biographical profile.
