The number of Chinese migrants settling in Portugal has been growing since the 1980s, and more rapidly since the turn of the century. However, studies focusing on these immigrants are still scarce and do not consider their diversity, including their different origins — essentially Macao, Mozambique, and China itself. The aim of this paper is to update the existing literature on Chinese migration to Portugal, particularly by looking at the immigrants' diversity as a group (Macanese, Chinese Mozambicans, economic migrants, students, and business migrants). Additionally, data from the 2011 Census is analyzed for Chinese economic migrants in terms of the light it can shed on some dimensions related not only to their migratory paths, family contexts and labor market but particularly to their professional and economic strategies.

In the past few years, European bi-national couples had been on rise motivated by EU´s mobility policies among its citizens. The aim of this paper is to expand upon a previous analysis of bi-national couples in Spain and Italy (Gaspar, 2011) to another three EU countries — France, Great Britain and Germany. The results revealed the presence of a threefold typology of bi-national couples, partially endorsing some of the patterns found beforehand. In the light of this evidence, the remainder of the article moves towards an understanding of how this typology has to be contextualized within broader specialized migration flows to these countries.

This article analyses some of the issues enabling us to understand European intra-marriage as a social phenomenon, by presenting some empirical findings resulting from 30 in-depth interviews carried out on couples in Lisbon. It begins by explaining how free movers may be seen as an
emerging group of citizens within the European matrimonial market, in order subsequently to clarify how the expression European intra-marriage is useful for categorising this new type of mixed partnership. Some results relating to personal, social and marital aspects will then shed light on
the dynamics of these European mixed unions. A final section suggests further lines of research that must be taken into consideration in future work in this field.

The following pages are a preliminary reflection on European intra-marriage as an emerging social phenomenon, and its potential cultural and institutional consequences on the EU consolidation and integration process. I will start by proposing a new expression – European intra-marriage – in order to better differentiate this "new" type of European family culture. I will then reflect on some of the features that better characterize the singularities that marriages between Europeans entail, so that, further on, we may distinguish an emerging "marriageable group" which has been on the rise among European citizens. Afterwards, I will analyse the possible consequences of European intra-marriage on the construction and establishment of a European identity; I will sustain that Europe, in this case, is probably being more influenced by the family than one might think. As a result, the Europeanization of cultural identities through multicultural families may play a supporting role in the creation of the EU alongside the institutional instruments of control wielded by political elites. If this is the case, we should pay close attention to a phenomenon that is simultaneously private and public and that may be consolidating a new form of European identity. In the final pages, I will summarise the main ideas developed here, as a way of clarifying the future research directions that may be fruitful for an understanding of European intra-marriage as an expanding trend.

This book brings together works by specialists from various areas of the social sciences to reflect on the presence of China in Portugal and in Portuguese-speaking territories. From the first Chinese coolies that migrated to the former Portuguese colonies more than 100 years ago, to the current investments along the Belt and Road Initiative, we take the pulse of this historic, social, political and economic presence and flows, that continues to renew and reinvent itself in the face of the challenges of contemporaneity
