Im Mittelpunkt des Beitrags stehen die Demokratisierungsprozesse in Osteuropa nach dem Zerfall des Kommunismus sowie die Fortschritte und Hindernisse auf dem Weg zu demokratischen und wirtschaftlichen Reformen. Die Autoren beschreiben im ersten Teil die sozioökonomische Entwicklung in den einzelnen osteuropäischen Staaten, das Erbe der kommunistischen Herrschaft, den Wandel im politisch-administrativen System und den Umgang mit nationalen Minderheiten. Im zweiten Teil stellen sie anhand von Beispielen die enge Beziehung zwischen politischen und ökonomischen Reformen dar und diskutieren abschliessend die ambivalenten Strukturen der postkommunistischen Demokratie. Die Unterentwicklung der Zivilgesellschaft stellt im Vergleich zu Westeuropa ihrer Meinung nach ein wesentliches Hindernis für den fortschreitenden Demokratisierungsprozess dar. (ICI)
