The article intertwines the history of the American credit card, its standardization, and interactional realization with the latest developments in payment systems. Understanding both credit cards and systems like Apple Pay or blockchain-based applications as part of an administrative longue durée, it argues for a different understanding of the Internet of Things. It should be understood both as a technical-informational and as an accounting infrastructure, with tensions arising between both segments.
This essay traces some developments of the network neutrality debate in Germany. It focuses on the Enquête-Kommission 'Internet and Digital Society' in the German Bundestag (2010–2012), and activist actions to promote network neutrality as a public issue (2013). Furthermore, the underlying concept of network neutrality – the 'end-to-end-principle' – is located in its historical beginnings from 1984 onwards. To understand what network neutrality is about, both data from participant observation and Science and Technology Studies heuristics are put to use. I propose to understand this infrastructural controversy as part of a bigger shift in the history of digitally networked media – one that might be dissolving the general purpose character of the Internet, thus transforming it into networks of special purpose applications and platforms.

; What an author is, affects media studies on many channels: Are thoughts free, can they belong to someone? If a work can be copied and circulated, how should it be shared? Many became directly aware of the economic constitution of the circulation of knowledge last year when the availability of scholarly literature for university instruction became, without further ado, extremely limited as a result of failed negotiations with VG Wort. Under the title «Micro-Monetization and Academic Freedom?», Sebastian Gießmann and Florian Sprenger have discussed the debate online since November 2016 in terms of academic politics, law, and the politics of education, in particular the planned individual registration of all texts used in research and teaching, for the Zeitschrift für Medienwissenschaft online; here they present current developments in the debate, in turn commented upon by Serjoscha Wiemer. The implications of new models of open access in terms of cultural history, technology, and subject (de)constitution shall be discussed in future contributions.

Susan Leigh Star's (1954-2010) research encompasses aspects of infrastructural and social theory, knowledge ecologies, feminism and theories of marginality. For the first time, this volume introduces the American science and technology sociologist's most important writings in German. Her texts on border objects, marginality, infrastructures and standards are commented upon by academics and scientists in these fields, and analyzed for their relevance to media studies. With commentaries by Geoffrey C. Bowker, Cora Bender, Ulrike Bergermann, Monika Dommann, Christine Hanke, Bernhard Nett, Jörg Potthast, Gabriele Schabacher, Cornelius Schubert, Erhard Schüttpelz und Jörg Strübing
