This paper is the fifth and final contribution to the interdisciplinary scientific project carried out by Marie Rota, aimed at enhancing the role of plants through the writing process. It explores a way of designing the writing of invasive plants in economics from a critical perspective of standard approaches, based on an approach which lies at the crossroads between the philosophy of human development theorised by Amartya Sen and the permacultural ethics initiated by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren. It will constitute an annex to Chapter 5 of the work to be published in Le Bord de l'eau: Marie Rota (Ed.) (2021), Written plants. An interdisciplinary approach. ; Ce papier est la cinquième et dernière contribution au projet scientifique interdisciplinaire porté par Marie Rota, visant à valoriser le rôle des plantes au travers du procédé de l'écriture. While he claims his belonging to a tradition of "realization-focused comparative approaches" pursued in various ways by Smith, Condorcet, Wollstonecraft, Bentham, Marx or Mill, his idea of justice emerges clearly from the debates provoked John Rawls' Theory of justice. Sen's philosophy is also situated in a particular discipline: economics, and more precisely social choice theory, to which Sen dedicated his research since the early Sixties. Moreover one cannot forget that Sen is the son and grand-son of Indian intellectuals, close to the poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore. Thus Sen belongs to the international community of economists which implies his conforming to specific conventions and rules, but he seems to be aware that his origins have partly shaped his world vision. These particular backgrounds partly explain his influential revitalization not only of normative economics, but political philosophy as well.

Résumé Cet article rappelle les ambitions et les enjeux théoriques qui ont conduit Sen à penser une nouvelle conception de l'avantage individuel et des évaluations sociales. Souvent perçue comme relevant de la philosophie morale, l'approche par les capabilités (AC) apparaît comme l'œuvre d'un théoricien du choix social dont l'éclectisme des recherches a permis d'aboutir à une approche du choix social plus ouverte et moins mécanique que celle proposée par Arrow en 1950. Grâce à une concentration nouvelle sur l'espace des potentiels et des capacités individuels et un glissement essentiel du rationnel vers le raisonnable, l'AC offre un cadre renouvelé pour l'économie normative.
