"Als die Labour-Partei Mitte 1997 die Konservativen unter John Major aus der Regierungsverantwortung in London drängte, präsentierte Wahlsieger Tony Blair England und auch Europa den sogenannten 'dritten Weg' als politisches Programm zur umfassenden Lösung der wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Probleme seines Landes. In der Grundidee aus den USA stammend, greift Blairs Konzept, das auf den Prinzipien einer gesunden Marktwirtschaft, des Konkurrenzkampfes und der persönlichen Verantwortung aller Bürger fußt, hierbei auch auf Leitsätze des Thatcherismus zurück, die der Premier und Labour-Führer der eigenen Partei erfolgreich als Idearium eines 'New Labour' zu verkaufen verstand. Trotz gewisser programmatischer Gemeinsamkeiten mit der Schröder'schen Vision einer 'neuen Mitte' für Deutschland ist der 'dritte Weg' indes ein typisch englischer Weg, der auf kein europäisches Land übertragbar ist, in England selbst aber - trotz schmerzhafter Begleiterscheinungen wie dem Abschied von dem so populären National Health Service - durchaus Erfolge verspricht."
