HUNGARIAN SOCIO-POLITICAL ATTITUDES AND REVOLUTIONARY ACTION

95 Hungarian refugees now in the US were intensively interviewed to determine the relation between major sociol'al factors, pol'al att's & revolutionary participation. Hostility to the Communist System was found to be attributable to econ distress & pol'al oppression, but also to the disruption of a coherent cultural pattern by an alien system. In many cases this hostility has rigidified & has generalized to non-Hungarian issues as well. Revolutionary action prior to Nov 4 was found to be related to such variables as degree of SE loss during the preceding 10 yrs & the rigidification of hostility to the system. Action after Nov 4 was unrelated to such factors. The subjects favored a democratic Gov for an independent Hungary, with moderate state control over industry & agri. IPSA.

ATTITUDES AND PERSONALITY PATTERNS OF HUNGARIAN REFUGEES
In: Public opinion quarterly: journal of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, Band 25, Heft 3, S. 351-365

A questionnaire study of 140 M Hungarian refugees now in the US to determine their alt's, actions, & personality patterns. An attempt was made to discover the interrelations both within & among the following variables: (1) major demographic & sociol'al variables, ie, age, educ, residence, & religion, (2) revolutionary participation, & (3) pol'al att's. A distinction is made between 2 clusters of pol'al att's: Cluster A - att's toward left-wing ideology; & Cluster B - rejection of compromise with communism. It is found that the younger subjects (S': are more likely to adhere to A, probably because of Communist indoctrination. Also is with residence so that S's from Budapest show greater opposition to left-wing ideology than do those from the provincial areas. Those high on B 'are more likely to be more anti-Semitic, & also more likely to be traditional - not to say authoritarian - in their worl outlook & personality structure.' However when S's educ & father's educ are partialed out, most of the inter-r's disappear. Hence rejection of compromise is an 'expression of a rather primitive pattern of reaction found esp in the lower soc & educ'al strata.' Pol'al fighting seems unrelated to any factors save age & a traditionalist orientation. But 'auxiliary activities & leadership roles are more prevalent among the groups of better educ & high soc origin, in part because they are more likely to possess certain necessary technical skills ... in part perhaps because these groups had lost more under the Communist system.' Overall anxiety scores 'do not reflect any signif diff's between Hungarian refugees & norms established for US pop's.' Anxiety if found to be more pronounced among the younger age groups & there is a negative r between anxiety & various indices of expressed hostility, eg, anti-Semitism, cynicism, & Cluster B. The latter may be accounted for by the hypothesis that 'individuals who are likely to express hostility directly & unambiguously are less likely to suffer anxiety & doubt.' Anxiety was also found to be higher in those who held some leadership role during the revolt. I. Taviss.
