The author discusses elderly alcohol and drug abusers in the workplace, emphasizing prevention and strategies to identify the abuser while the problem is still in the incipient stage. Social workers' roles in providing treatment are discussed.

The author surveyed social workers engaged in both agency and private practice and found no major differences in how direct client services were rendered in either setting. Although the exclusionary nature of private practice is an issue of concern, being active in both settings is a viable professional option and an accommodation to the stresses and low financial rewards of full-time agency practice.

Since treatment of the elderly is likely to be a continuing process, case planning for it should be viewed as a continuum of time with due regard to the common stresses of aging. This article presents a design for such casework with interventions at periods of major stress.

Caseworkers increasingly see clients moving through phases from separation to the establishment of new family units. A framework for working with these persons identifies the predictable phases and common impediments to coping faced by these clients and suggests that a flexible approach to timing interventions is most appropriate.
