The USSR on "the eastern flank" pursues two main goals: economic development of the Soviet Far East and integration into the international economy of the Pacific Basin. After a look at the history of the Soviet Far East, the authors discuss Soviet foreign policy in East Asia since 1945, threat perceptions of East and Southeast Asian countries regarding the USSR, the era of Vladivostok, prospects for the USSR's deeper economic co-operation with the countries of the Pacific region among other issues.
