Several individuals, groups, and organizations have been fighting against oil and natural gas drilling in Portuguese territory. The mobilizations intensified in 2015 in Algarve, and since then 13 concession agreements for oil and gas exploitation, extraction, and production have been canceled. Two concessions for gas drilling remain in Leiria, and this is where the movement is presently more active. Inspired by literature on the role of players and tactics in social movements, as well as on the meanings of agency, we examined how individuals, groups, and organizations contested and demanded the cancellation of the existing concession agreements. We conducted 12 in-depth interviews with highly engaged activists. Based on a thematic analysis, we identified six major themes, named as: "multiple players, a shared goal"; "building bridges with multiple players and tactics"; "links to institutional power"; "the route to the court"; "paths to popular mobilization"; and "movement building and power to act." Overall, we identified three broad sets of tactics used by the movement, which shows the diversity of players involved in the struggles against oil and gas in Portugal. The first tactic relates to the social movement organizations' efforts to connect with institutional power, either by seeking to pressure local political leaders or by using public consultations, petitions, and other means for expressing their voices. The second tactic refers to the movement's engagement with legal procedures, and the third relates to the movement's efforts to promote popular mobilization. In terms of actions, the movement engaged in protests and public demonstrations, public consultations, public campaigns with celebrities, leaflet distributions, political pressuring of leaders, awareness campaigns in schools and streets, legal actions, among other approaches. All participants described the movement as successful in achieving its shared goal "to cancel oil and gas concessions" and attributed such a success to the movement's ability to combine different strategies and tactics. The movement is also perceived as a setting for building political agency. We discuss the role of the movement in building bridges between multiple players/tactics and in constructing political agency, by focusing on the implications for collective action in environmental and climate issues. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

This book evaluates the risk to human health of ethylene glycol.Ethylene glycol is a colourless odourless sweet-tasting relatively non-volatile liquid. It is used in the manufacture of poly-ethylene terephthalate in natural gas processing and as an antifreeze agent. Available data from acute poisoning cases (humans) and repeated-dose toxicity studies (experimental ani-mals) indicate that the kidney is a critical organ for the toxicity of ethylene glycol in both humans and experimental animals

The western Africa is the origin of the HIV2 infection where Guinea Bissau has been the country where the rate of infection is higher. This infection have extended to Europe through the relationship established between European countries and there African colonies in the past. At 2010, 1.295 cases of HIV 2 infection were notified in Portugal, which represents nearly 3.3% of all HIV infections. Almost 510 of these cases are classified as AIDS. Although the majority of notified cases is from African patients there is still a significant contribution of the Portuguese people in these numbers. Retrospective analysis of HIV2 infected women and men followed at Faro's Hospital HIV/AIDS consult between January 1992 and June 2012. In this sample were included every patient older than 15 years and were excluded every patient than haven't been at the consult for a period superior to 18–24 months. Deceased patients and address change were also exclusion factors. Of all 1500 patients followed in consult, 35 of them were infected with HIV2 (2.3%); 18 women and 17 men. There were 3 patients that were co‐infected with HIV1 and HIV2. Mean age were 52.9 years. 19 of the infected patients were leucodermic and 16 were melanodermic. The majority of patients (19 cases) were Portuguese. The rest of them were from Africa where Guinea Bissau were the only country represented. In opposition to the HIV1 infection, the sexual transmission is by far the more common way of being infected. There's no case of vertical transmission known in our population. At the first contact, the majority of patients appear asymptomatic (16 cases) while a minority (4 cases) manifest themselves by AIDS. There is an AIDS case that result from HIV1 and HIV2 co‐infection (only one intravenous drug user in the group). The more common treatment is the association of NRTI and PI. The HIV2 infection is characterized by a longer clinical evolution when compared to the HIV1 infection. That fact explains why the mean age of patients is higher in the first case. This study shows that there isn't a gender incidence difference between men and women. Despite what happens at a national level, at local level the HIV2 infection is more prevalent among patients born in Portugal. It's important to notice that the HIV1 and HIV2 co‐infection is rising and that leads to some questions like viral synergism with consequent rapid disease progression.

Academic international mobility and intra-European highly skilled migration are consolidated trends. Strongly stimulated by EU policies, the opportunities are highly dynamic, and circulation through different jobs and countries is a striking feature of the academic community. However, for a fragile economy and scientific system as the Portuguese ones, those trends are synonyms of brain drain, particularly in times of Eurozone crisis. In order to question the place of the economic crisis on scientists' migration decision-making process, and considering that academic mobility is often associated with individual career perspectives and encouraged by European policies, five individual portraits are analysed.

In this paper, we present a set of 1800 galaxy mock catalogues designed to match the Dark Energy Survey Year-1 BAO sample (Crocce et al. 2017) in abundance, observational volume, redshift distribution and uncertainty, and redshift-dependent clustering. The simulated samples were built upon HALOGEN (Avila et al. 2015) halo catalogues, based on a 2LPTdensity field with an empirical halo bias, For each of them, a light-cone is constructed by the superposition of snapshots in the redshift range 0.45 < z < 1.4. Uncertainties introduced by so-called photometric redshifts estimators were modelled with a double-skewed-Gaussian curve fitted to the data. We populate haloes with galaxies by introducing a hybrid halo occupation distribution-halo abundance matching model with two free parameters. These are adjusted to achieve a galaxy bias evolution b(z(ph)) that matches the data at the 1 sigma level in the range 0.6 < z(ph) < 1.0. We further analyse the galaxy mock catalogues and compare their clustering to the data using the angular correlation function w(theta), the comoving transverse separation clustering xi(mu < 0.8)(S-perpendicular to) and the angular power spectrum C-l, finding them in agreement. This is the first large set of three-dimensional {RA,Dec.,z} galaxy mock catalogues able to simultaneously accurately reproduce the photometric redshift uncertainties and the galaxy clustering.
