Makes a case for a cross-national analysis of acquisition of citizenship by foreign residents in Europe, frequently regarded as a prime indicator of formal integration. After a brief review of theories & concepts & of legislation & policy, the quality of extant data on the subject is evaluated, & suggestions are offered for how it might be improved & harmonized. Analysis of the main patterns & trends since 1980 indicates that Europe has experienced an increasing number of naturalizations, while immigration rates have remained stable.
