To ensure a healthy growth of the economy particularly in the manufacturing sector, the Indian Government is more than ever focussed on promoting the use of sustainable and affordable energy resources. Recent initiatives such as the Solar Cities Development Programme are a good example. However, in order for these initiatives to gain legitimacy as part of a new 'green industrial policy', the Indian Government needs to do more, especially by bringing on board strategies for combating poverty within the gamut of this emerging 'green industrial policy' as well as to re-think India's position on global conventions on climate change.

This paper offers a commentary on what decentralisation has come to mean in India, based on recent research conducted in Kerala, one of the southern states. In particular, the paper discusses the tensions between 'regionalism' and 'localism'. It begins with a brief outline of how decentralisation is conceived within the broad literature. This is followed by a case study, where the shifts in forms of decentralisation adopted by the Kerala state government are examined. The paper concludes with key findings that underpin an understanding of decentralisation within the Indian context.

The "poverty‐in‐context" approach to understanding poverty is shaped by the needs and priorities of a particular context, and it can be used as the basis for identifying pro‐poor projects in local strategies such as City Development Plans. A key argument for the introduction of the City Development Plans initiative (2007–2012) in India was to move away from national conceptions of and responses to poverty and to instead focus on engaging with local understandings of poverty. Through a case study of the City Development Plan initiative in Trivandrum, the capital city of the Kerala state in southern India, we argue that an understanding of poverty at the local level did not accommodate contextual needs and priorities; consequently, we develop a poverty‐in‐context approach based on semi‐structured qualitative interviews with various stakeholders in the case study area. The article concludes by suggesting how in the future a poverty‐in‐context approach might be used to shape pro‐poor policy in general and preparation of City Development Plans in particular.

This paper explored key issues in how knowledge of the environment is constructed in the Third World. Drawing on which, it showed that there are both explicit and implicit ways in which this knowledge is contested. Particularly, it discussed how implicit forms of contestation are problematic in Third World economies because they are exclusionary and also where such issues become 'headlines' only after environmental damage and accompanying social injustices have resulted. It concludes by raising crucial questions for environmental research in the Third World where there is limited role of governments and communities in protecting their environment.

Background: Patients with severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia may benefit from a variety of patient education materials. Despite the availability of various resources, it is essential to assess the extent to which patients can comprehend the materials provided. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the reliability and readability of the patient information leaflet (PIL) for schizophrenia. Method: A quasi-experimental study was conducted for a period of 6 months in the departments of psychiatry. Patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia were recruited for the study. A user-testing questionnaire was developed and validated with the help of an expert committee to assess reliability. Later, translated versions of the questionnaire were then administered to the patients based on their language preference and evaluated by test-retest analysis. The readability was assessed using pre-validated and translated versions of the PIL. Initially, baseline scores of patient knowledge were assessed using a reliable user-testing questionnaire. Later, their responses were reassessed again using the same questionnaire after reading the PIL. Results: A total of 45 patients participated in the study. From the total sample, 20 participants were randomly selected for reliability assessment. Intraclass-correlation coefficient (ICC), a statistical tool of reliability, give .6 for Kannada, .7 for Malayalam and 1 for the English version of the questionnaire. The overall patient's knowledge was found to be improved from 50.4 to 76.4 after reading the PIL. Conclusion: Patients with schizophrenia were able to comprehend the information available on the PIL. Therefore, further research is needed to determine its efficacy in a larger population.

AbstractThis paper offers a new child‐centred methodology that explores children's visions of their futures, encourages self‐reflection and depth and shares children's voices with peers and researchers, as unbrokered as possible. This final stage of a longitudinal, arts‐based, social science‐informed project was delivered by partnering with schools in socially disadvantaged areas of Bristol, a UK city. Our two‐phase activity used a Tree metaphor to explore children's hopes, ambitions and support, looking forward to recovery from the COVID‐19 pandemic. The analysis combined multi‐disciplinary thematic and visual‐narrative analysis, and revealed diversity, intersection and individuality in themes that scaled out from the child and their family over different timescales. Themes included emotion (concerns; empathy), experiences (happenings, resources skills; aspirations) and relationships, linked to their recent experiences of COVID‐19 mitigation. The paper reflects critically on children's and researchers' positionality, and the complexities involved in developing research methods that encourage children's autonomy, agency and authenticity.
