The metaphor of networking informed practices of urban spectatorship in New York City in the 1920s and 1930s. Hugh Ferriss famously represented a future Manhattan in his book The Metropolis of Tomorrow as a careful grouping of distinct nodes unified by the perspective of an individual spectator. In his drawings, a lone figure seems to assemble the disparate parts of the city into a comprehensible whole. The networked urbanism to which Ferriss alluded was first explored in the built environment during the long construction process of the midtown Manhattan development Rockefeller Center. By focusing on its construction plans, public artwork, and publicity, this essay traces the development of early networked urbanism in New York City. It investigates the rhetoric of the network in real space and imagined and explores how this metaphor influences the relationship between the urban spectator and the developing urban landscape.

'Meaningful Inefficiences' describes an innovation culture within public serving organizations (government, news, civil society), where people, faced with silver bullet solutions involving big data and streamlined apps, are actually designing for trust. The resulting meaningful inefficiencies involve creating and nurturing inclusive, participatory, and accessible publics by opening up spaces for play and discussion.

The goal of this article is two-fold: to introduce the concept of augmented deliberation and to demonstrate its implementation in a pilot project.We look specifically at a project called Hub2. This community engagement project employed the online virtual world Second Life to augment community deliberation in the planning of a neighborhood park in Boston, Massachusetts. The local community was invited to gather in a physical space and a virtual space simultaneously, and a physical moderator and virtual designer orchestrated deliberation.This project demonstrates the design values central to augmented deliberation: (1) it is a multimedia group communication process which balances the specific affordances of digital technologies with the established qualities of face-to-face group deliberation; (2) it emphasizes the power of experience; and (3) it promotes sustainability and reproducibility through digital tracking. Augmented deliberation, when properly designed, provides a powerful mechanism to enable productive and meaningful public deliberation. The article concludes with directions for further research.

This article describes a pilot program in Boston, Massachusetts, that incorporates virtual worlds into the urban planning process. The authors argue that the immersive, playful, and social qualities of the virtual world Second Life are uniquely appropriate to engage people in dialogue about their communities. By sharing experiences of a planned space and having the opportunity to deliberate over, comment on, and alter that space, previously disempowered individuals are able to form politically powerful groups. This takes place through the formation of what the authors call placeworlds, a subgroup of the Habermasian lifeworld that is organized around the shared understanding of place. Second Life and similar virtual world platforms offer profound possibilities for how local communities can imagine themselves as political actors in the face of global and homogenizing political systems.

Upon release from prison, women face barriers in every step of their journey home, with most reentry services designed for men. With virtual reality (VR) headsets increasingly affordable and normalized as a mental health treatment modality, VR is being adopted by prisons around the United States. We argue that the risks and affordances of VR in this political context necessitate centering those with lived experience as creative agents to avoid designing media that re-traumatizes, reduces the complexities of reentry, and reproduces oppressive prisoner–guard dynamics. This article documents and analyzes the design process of a VR reentry program for a state prison to help incarcerated women practice responding to high-stress reentry situations, prior to their release. The resulting VR prototype draws on therapeutic VR work but takes a community-based participatory design approach. We conclude by discussing the institutional and cultural tensions of implementing a participatory design process in a US state prison system.
