De nombreux changements au sein de la discipline anthropologique – en particulier le « tournant postmoderne » des années 1980 – ne peuvent être pleinement compris qu'à la lumière des transformations majeures qui se sont opérées dans la recomposition contemporaine des classes sociales et, en particulier, par rapport au rôle de l'université dans la reproduction d'une classe bureaucratique et managériale, laquelle a fini par supplanter tous les éléments relevant de la classe ouvrière au sein des principaux partis politiques dits « de gauche ». L'anthropologie réflexive, ainsi que ce que j'appelle le « foucaldisme vulgaire », bien que passant pour des formes d'activisme, semblent surtout incarner la conscience prédominante propre à cette classe. En lieu et place de ces mouvements intellectuels et militants, cet essai entend promouvoir une démarche alliant soutien aux mouvements sociaux et une politique préfigurative au sein de la sphère académique.
