In an era of ever faster and more momentous technological development, both technology assessment and transdisciplinary interventions are in danger of structurally lagging behind the speed of innovation. This paper proposes a new tiered approach to technology assessment at low Technology Readiness Levels that enables a both rapid and concerted interdisciplinary science response to this Great Acceleration. Covering sustainability, ethics, and consumer issues, this approach encourages and enables the innovators themselves to conduct assessments embedded in the innovation process as early as possible. Suitable tools for early engagement that help facilitate development-integrated assessments are introduced and described. The design and use of these instruments in the field of basic research is illustrated using the Cluster of Excellence livMatS as an example.

Das Erreichen ambitionierter Nachhaltigkeitsziele ist nur mit Hilfe sozio-technischer Transformationen möglich. Aber wie kann der dringend notwendige Umbruch – zeitlich und gesellschaftlich angemessen – initiiert und unterstützt werden? Und welche Gesellschaftsbereiche und Stakeholder müssen berücksichtigt werden? Das Buch bietet eine Aufarbeitung des aktuellen Forschungstandes, ergänzt durch praktische Fallbeispiele. Die Ergebnisse der Analyse werden in einer Heuristik zusammengeführt. So werden unter anderem die gesellschaftlichen Teil-Systeme, die im Rahmen einer Transformation adressiert werden sollten, zusammengestellt und ihre Bedeutung erläutert. Zusätzlich werden Governance-Herausforderungen, die sich aus dem speziellen Charakter von Transformationsprozessen ergeben, identifiziert. Das Buch bietet sowohl neue Ansätze für die Transformationsforschung als auch wichtige Erkenntnisse und Beispiele für all jene Akteure, die ein Interesse an der Initiierung und dem Management von Transformationen haben

Many environmental problems have been successfully resolved in recent decades. However some are persistent and prove difficult to solve, and new ones have been added. Environmental problems can be particularly persistent if their causes are closely linked to the way we do business, to central aspects of our society or to lifestyles that are perceived as attractive. This guide can help staff in the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU ) to tackle such environmental problems. For this purpose, approaches to "transformative environmental policy" are presented.
