A review essay on books by (1) L. Andrews, Wales Says Yes (Bridgend: Seren, 1999); (2) R. Davies, Devolution: A Process Not an Event (Cardiff: Instit Welsh Affairs, 1999); (3) J. Osmond, New Politics in Wales (London: Charter, 1998); (4) J. Osmond [Ed], The New National Assembly Agenda (Cardiff: Instit Welsh Affairs, 1998); (5) B. Taylor & K. Thompson, Scotland and Wales: Nations Again? (Cardiff: U Wales Press, 1999); & G. Day & D. Thomas [Eds], Contemporary Wales: An Annual Review of Economic and Social Research (Cardiff: U Wales Press, 1999). Discusses the rebirth of Welsh politics, particularly the road to referendum, the referendum of 1997 that gave approval of devolution, & prospects for the new National Assembly for Wales. It is acknowledged that these works are the beginning point, but the need is expressed for a more sophisticated & critical attitude in Welsh political writing. Davies's pamphlet recounts the debates over devolution within the Labour Party & later within the government. Andrews gives a personal view of the referendum campaign, giving insights to the formation of Welsh politics, but a weak vision to the future & the significance of the Assembly for Wales. The collection edited by Taylor & Thomson with information from the referendum surveys conducted in Scotland & Wales in 1997 points out that civic identity must be developed among the large number of nonvoters, those who did not vote for the Assembly, & those with weak or no Welsh identity. Osmond's pamphlet is optimistic for the future of the National Assembly & Welsh politics. His edited volume presents contributions by politicians & policymakers discussing the future of the National Assembly. Contemporary Wales is a forum for critical debate on Welsh challenges. 11 References. L. A. Hoffman
