Some farm families in Michigan are finding that their cattle have Bovine Tuberculosis. When this occurs, they face a challenge to their family business, their family processes, and their way of life. The Michigan Bovine TB eradication program also confronts them. Together, Bovine TB and the eradication program cause significant stress, straining the relationship of farmers with their farm ecosystems, and causing the loss of ability to effectively participate in decision-making that is crucial to the farm family and the farm business. These experiences define farm families as recipients of environmental injustice. There is a need to achieve environmental justice by reducing the impact of Bovine TB, as well as adverse effects of programs designed to eliminate the disease.

Young homeless children face many adverse circumstances, unlike children who are nurtured in supportive families and stable homes. Given experiences of chaos, unpredictability, and upheaval, homeless children are placed in jeopardy with regard to meeting their needs for successful developmental outcomes. In particular, these experiences likely cause fear and anxiety, with consequences that adversely affect psychological development and lead to disempowerment of the self and learned helplessness. Using principles of positive psychology and guiding homeless children toward the creation of schemas of resilience and self-confidence can provide them with the basis for adaptation, happiness, and appropriate decision making.

Those responsible for providing services to the newly unemployed face the need to make choices relative to the allocation of scarce resources. Making these choices requires data on the perceived needs of those to be served. A sample of newly umemployed workers responded to a questionnaire indicating their needs for information and community services.

SummaryThis study used path analysis to assess the chances of survival of babies in a neonatal intensive care unit in Lansing, Michigan, USA. Two paths to neonatal survival were identified and the variables accounted for 20% of the variance in gestational age. The first path showed that prior infant losses were negatively correlated with gestational age while in the second path, gestational age showed negative relationships with pre-pregnancy weight and household job worries.

AbstractThis study examined whether children's representations of parenting (perceptions of authoritative discipline and empathy) moderated the association between harsh punishment—including corporal punishment (CP) and verbal punishment (VP)—and children's emotion regulation at the age of five years. Participants were 559 low‐income mother‐child dyads. Maternal self‐reports and home observations were used to measure punishment. Children's representations were assessed using the MacArthur Story Stem Battery. Children's emotion regulation was assessed by observer rating via the Leiter International Performance Scale–Revised. Hierarchical multiple regressions revealed that children's authoritative disciplinary representations moderated the effects of both VP and CP on children's emotion regulation. Empathic representations moderated the effects of VP only on children's emotion regulation. The current findings highlight the role of children's internal representations as potential protective factors in the context of harsher forms of punishment.
