This paper provides insights from experiences in data gathering and recruitment from two research projects on disability/mental health in Ghana. The focus of the study explores stigma amongst individuals diagnosed with mental illness and their caregivers. The study investigates the positioning of the researcher in a superior light by participants which often wrests power from those who should be considered the true experts of their own circumstances. Inequality in the interview process thus carried the risk of impacting the quality of the data, as some participants did not consider themselves as 'experts' of their condition. The paper explores strategies for addressing these challenges of hierarchy and inequality in the research process in the Global South. Based on the study, we report on our experiences as follows: (1) ensuring that participants are empowered to engage with researchers; and (2) training local researchers to engage in culturally sensitive research processes.

Many have praised the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), first adopted by the UN in 2006, as a revolutionary step towards disability rights in Africa. But how real is the progress towards equality for persons with physical disabilities, mental health difficulties, blindness, deafness or albinism? What are the barriers to the CRPD's successful implementation on the continent, and how might we enforce inclusiveness and equality among those disadvantaged? This book brings together the findings of researchers in Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa to offer grassroots' perspectives on the challenges and possibilities of achieving disability rights under the CRPD. Challenging the generally optimistic view presented to date, the contributors provide evidence-based trenchant critiques of the Convention, highlight the ways in which disability rights are interpreted in varying contexts and with different disabilities, and examine particular issues in relation to children and women. Finally, the contributors suggest ways of moving forward and achieving disability rights in Africa.

This article investigates the socio-economic impact of mental illness on individuals and their caregivers in Ghana, whose plight is dire due to poverty, stigma and discrimination. Seeking to illuminate participants' lived experiences, the study is based on grassroots, first-hand narratives from 12 individuals receiving psychiatric care and 7 of their caregivers. Including caregivers fills a major research gap because they have not been studied extensively in Ghana or Africa, despite facing similar challenges including financial burdens and stigma. We conclude with recommendations for improving government support and social work practice in the context of mental illness in Ghana.

This book explores stigma and discrimination associated with disability and mental health in Ghana. In conversations with caregivers and persons with disabilities, the authors examine the socio-cultural challenges that undermine treatment and support for these individuals and provide recommendations for improved policy and practice.
