Macedoine: le nom de la discorde

In this interview with Isabelle Lasserre, the prime minister of Macedonia considers at length his country's dispute with Greece since its independence. The fact is that Athens has never accepted Macedonia calling itself Macedonia. It considers that name to be part of the Greek historical and cultural heritage and doesn't want it claimed by a neighboring state. Greece is determined to bend Skopje to its will, and is leveraging its power to block Macedonia's entry into NATO and the European Union. Nikola Gruevski says he's ready to compromise, but stresses that it takes two to tango. Since Greece's position is unyielding, he calls on the good sense and support of the international community: his country's membership in NATO and the EU would make a powerful contribution to stability in the Balkans. And it is very much in Europe's interests to better integrate this sensitive region. Adapted from the source document.
