Purpose.To examine the association between multiple dimensions of work-family spillover, and physical and mental health among working midlife adults.Design.Cross-sectional analyses of self reported data.Setting.The National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS), 1995.Subjects.Employed adults aged 35–65 years (n = 1547) who participated in the telephone interview and returned the mail-back questionnaires of the MIDUS (overall response rate of 60.8%).Measures.Independent variables included negative spillover from work to family, positive spillover from work to family, negative spillover from family to work, positive spillover from family to work. Self-rated physical health, chronic conditions, obesity, self-rated mental health, negative psychological well-being, and positive psychological well-being were outcomes.Results.Independent of negative spillover between work and family, more positive spillover from work to family was associated with better physical health (odds ratio [OR] = 1.17, p ≤ .05) and mental health (OR = 1.28, p ≤ .01). More positive spillover from family to work was associated with less chronic conditions (OR = .85, p ≤ . 05), less negative well-being (OR = .67, p ≤ 001), as well as better mental health (OR = 1.45, p ≤ .01) and more positive well-being (OR 1.76, p ≤ 001).Conclusions.Health promotion or employment programs and policies may need to focus on minimizing negative spillover between work and family and promoting positive spillover between work and family.

The purpose of this volume is to showcase alternative theoretical and methodological approaches to work and family research, and present methodological alternatives to the widely known shortcomings of current research on work and the family. In the first part of the book contributors consider various theoretical perspectives including: Positive Organizational Psychology System Theory Multi-Level Theoretical Models Dyadic Study Designs The chapters in Part Two consider a number of methodological issues including: key issues pertaining to sampling, the role of diary studies, Case Cross-over designs, Biomarkers, and Cross-Domain and Within-Domain Relations. Contributors also elaborate the conceptual and logistical issues involved in incorporating novel measurement approaches. The book will be of essential reading for researchers and students in work and organizational psychology, and related disciplines.

AbstractObjectiveGuided by Gottman's framework of marital stability and the ecological theories, the present study aims to understand the relationships between work–family spillover and marital stability within two levels of context—the relational and social cultural contexts.BackgroundThe relational context of marriage is manifested by spousal relationships—spousal support and strain, which would moderate the relationship between work–family spillover and marital stability. Identified relationships also unfold within sociocultural contexts.MethodThis study uses data from the Midlife in the United States 2 (MIDUS 2) and Midlife in Japan (MIDJA) projects to explore these dynamics. The current study involved 500 Japanese and 1,800 American participants who were married and employed at the time of data collection.ResultsResults from multigroup path models revealed cultural differences. The relational context—spousal support and strain—played moderating roles in the associations between work–family spillover and marital stability in both countries. However, distinct sociocultural patterns emerged as spousal strain showed a stronger association among Japanese participants, whereas spousal support was more prominent among Americans in relation to marital stability.ConclusionThe results support Gottman's contention that positive and negative features of marriage are related to marital stability directly and indirectly by shaping the impacts of work–family spillover and sociocultural expectations of work and family.ImplicationsPractitioners and organizations should recognize the role of spouses in addressing the negative effects of work–family spillover in marriage, as well as incorporating clients' or employees' cultural backgrounds when addressing marital concerns.

Family science has been doing translational science since before it came into vogue. Nevertheless, the field has been subjected to the same forces in the broader academy that have created a widening chasm between discovery and practice. Thus, the primary objective of this article is to translate the principles, concepts, and models of translational science to solidify an identity for family science and help the field move forward in broader academic, care delivery, and policy arenas. Alternative models of translational science, primarily from biomedicine but also from other disciplines, are reviewed and critically analyzed, and core concepts and principles are isolated, elaborated, and applied to family science. Family science's long‐standing commitment to the doctrine of evidence‐based practice, and its ongoing endorsement of the principles of scientific duality and multidisciplinary utility, places it in a preeminent position for using the zeitgeist of translational science to move forward. Nonetheless, the field has important epistemological, practical, professional, and curricular steps to complete to better position itself as a distinct and valued body of scientists. Ultimately, we argue that embracing the principles, concepts, and models of translational science should be leveraged by family science to help brand itself as a unique and essential social science field for enhancing the human condition.

AbstractIn this paired article the authors review research on paid work, parenting, and health in order to isolate fundamental questions and issues that remain unaddressed. Next, consistent with the theme of this special issue, the authors introduce social neuroscience and highlight how this emerging multidisciplinary science offers substantial promise for advancing key unresolved issues in the paid work, parenting, and health literature. The article concludes with suggestions for promising areas of research wherein family scientists and social neuroscientists could build collaborative research to address gaps in the work–family literature.

Using an ecological person—process—context model and recent conceptualization of the "employment continuum," this study examines differences in components of work—family balance among individuals in diverse types of jobs ranging from "inadequate" to "optimal." Cross-sectional data from the 1997 National Study of the Changing Workforce ( n = 2,877) were used to test differences in work-to-family conflict and enrichment among individuals whose jobs have different constellations of favorable structural and psychosocial attributes. Results suggest jobs enriched with both structural and psychosocial attributes contribute to better work—family balance by reducing conflict and promoting enrichment. Similar patterns occurred regardless of family employment arrangement, but dual earner men reported higher levels of conflict compared with women when holding inadequate jobs. The pattern of results suggests that viewing jobs holistically is important for understanding the work—family interface.

Guided by social control theory and an adapted version of Bengtson and Roberts's model of intergenerational solidarity, this study used data from the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS), with respondents ( N=3,485) ages 25 to 74, to examine the associations between multiple dimensions of family solidarity (affectual, normative, associational, functional, structural) and seven behaviors advocated to promote health. Although some results supported the hypotheses that family ties promote better health behaviors, particularly among men, a number of cases were found to have either no association or a problematic association with positive health behaviors.

AbstractObjectiveThis qualitative research describes how low‐education, largely undocumented immigrant Latino parents understand and engage in their children's education in the United States.BackgroundEducation has a dual meaning in Latin America, emphasizing children's moral and academic development. It is unclear if this cultural model shapes how immigrant parents navigate the U.S. educational system with their children.MethodIn‐depth interviews were completed with low‐education, largely undocumented immigrant Latino parents (N = 16). The narrative data were analyzed using a consensual method.Findings.Analyses resulted in a conceptual model with three primary themes: Latino parents' bidimensional definition of education (i.e., moral and book smarts), unfamiliarity with education (i.e., the lack of educational experience and desire for generational improvement with education), and educational responsibilities (i.e., a division of labor between parents and teachers).ConclusionsThe developed model suggests that low‐education immigrant Latino parents are involved in children's education in various ways related to their cultural capital, personal experience, and view of school as a "general black box."Implications.Eliminating the education gap among Latino youth whose parents are undocumented or have limited educational attainment requires acknowledging that "parental involvement" has diverse cultural meanings. Outreach programs based on the proposed model may create more productive partnerships between parents and schools.

Purpose. To operationalize, estimate the prevalence, and ascertain the epidemiology of complete health. Design. Cross-sectional analyses of self-reported survey data collected via a telephone interview and a self-administered questionnaire. Setting. Households in the 48 contiguous states in the United States in 1995. Subjects. Random-digit dialing sample of 3032 adults between the ages of 25 and 74, with a response rate of 61%. Measures. Physical illness and health were measured with a total of 37 items—a checklist of 29 chronic health conditions, a six-item scale of limitations of daily living, and a single item for perceived current health and for perceived 5-year change in energy. Mental illness and health were measured with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview Short Form diagnostic scale of major depression, panic, and generalized anxiety disorders and three established multi-item scales of subjective well-being (emotional, psychological, and social well-being). Completely healthy adults have high levels of physical and mental health and low levels of physical and mental illnesses; completely unhealthy adults have high levels of physical and mental illnesses and low levels of physical and mental health. Incompletely healthy adults consisted of two groups: one group is physically healthy (high physical health and low physical illness) and mentally unhealthy, and the second group is mentally healthy (high mental health and low mental illness) and physically unhealthy. Results. Nineteen percent of adults were completely healthy, 18.8% were completely unhealthy, and 62.2% had a version of incomplete health. Compared with completely unhealthy adults, completely healthy adults are likely to be young (25–34 years of age) or old (55–64 and 65–74 years), are married, are male, are college educated, and have higher household incomes. Conclusions. Operationalizing complete health highlights objectives for increasing the prevalence of complete health, and reducing the prevalence of complete ill-health and incomplete health.

This study deepens our theoretical and practical understanding of work—family balance, defined as the 'accomplishment of role-related expectations that are negotiated and shared between an individual and his/her role-related partners in the work and family domains' (Grzywacz & Carlson, 2007: 458). We develop a new measure of work—family balance and establish discriminant validity between it, work—family conflict, and work—family enrichment. Further, we examine the relationship of work—family balance with six key work and family outcomes. Results suggest that balance explains variance beyond that explained by traditional measures of conflict and enrichment for five of six outcomes tested: job satisfaction, organizational commitment, family satisfaction, family performance, and family functioning. We conclude with a discussion of the applications of our work.

Work–family research employing nationally representative samples and multiple methods of data collection is uncommon. We used data from two affiliated national surveys to examine the distribution of work–family spillover among working adults. The National Study of Daily Experiences (n= 741), an 8‐day daily diary study using a subsample of the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS; N= 2,130), allowed work–family spillover to be conceptualized and operationalized in different ways. Analyses testing family life course hypotheses indicated that self‐reported negative and positive spillover between work and family were not randomly distributed within the labor force. Age was found to have a persistent curvilinear effect on negative spillover between work and family. The prevalence of co‐occurring work and family stress reported over 8 days was comparable across nearly all the sociodemographic characteristics.

Abstract
The interpersonal nature of childhood abuse has led researchers to examine how abuse in childhood is associated with the quality of adult women's romantic relationships. Depression is one pathway by which childhood abuse may be associated with relationship quality. The current study considers whether childhood abuse is linked to positive and negative relationship quality through depressive symptoms. Data were obtained from women participating in the Longitudinal Study of Childhood Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN; N = 544) and were analysed using structural equation modelling. Results indicate a significant indirect effect from childhood abuse to both positive and negative quality through women's depressive symptoms. The indirect effect from abuse to negative relationship quality through depression was significantly larger than positive relationship quality. These results suggest that childhood abuse and subsequent depressive symptoms has a twofold effect on women's romantic relationships.
