International audience ; This article draws on the perspective of neo-republicanism to reassess the legitimacy of the notion of « national identity », against its conservative and xenophobic politicization. The concept of non-domination operates as a critical tool to articulate the process of citizens' identification to a political community and the integration of ethno-cultural minorities. This philosophical basis allows to plead for an education that equip future citizens with a multicultural picture of their national identity.

If You Praise Equal Respect, How Come You're So Intolerant ? ; If You Praise Equal Respect, How Come You're So Intolerant ?: Overcoming the French Republican Paradox
International audience ; In France, republicanism is the political tradition through which the French people interpret democratic and liberal ideals. Neverthless, by contrast with other liberal democracies, the French model of integration, based on the championing of colorblind universalism, often adopts a critical stance towards manifestations of cultural and ethnic identities. Therefore, it is often perceived as intolerant, as suggested by the numerous critics of the 2004 law banning ostentatious religious signs from state schools. As such, French republicanism seems to be paradoxically praising respect for all citizens while practicing intolerance towards members of ethnic minorities. To analyse this seeming paradox, the paper designs a typology to disentangle the different theoretical positions concerning the relationships of respect and tolerance within French republicanism. It thusly proposes to distinguish four different families (communitarian, perfectionist, pragmatic and critical republicans) and claims that the last one offers the best way to solve the French paradox.

Reworking the neo-republican sense of belonging
International audience ; The paper focuses on neo-republicans' emphasis on the national sense of belonging which is oft en judged as being crucial for political legitimacy. It argues that, however legitimate this claim may be, neo-republicans' defi nition of the sense of belonging is worryingly indeterminate and still likely to foster exclusive national identities, even if they explicitly support value pluralism. .

International audience ; The appropriation of the theme of multiculturalism by republican thinkers is the subject of this article. One may start by doubting that the very idea of a republican multiculturalism makes any sense, but as I shall show, the repudiation of any multicultural republican project is a French exception. Neo-republican thinkers such as Philip Pettit, John Maynor and Cécile Laborde have given special attention to multiculturalism. I will investigate the peculiarities of each of these approaches and, in particular, how Laborde resolves the tensions that neo-republicans may enter- tain with the recognition of cultural diversity, by inserting a critical perspective in the delibera- tive proposition initiated by Maynor. The originality of a republican multiculturalism is thus to recall the instrumental nature of the politicization of minority identities in the struggle against the ascription of identity faced by minorities, and not to enhance their public differences.

From Multicultural Citizenship to the Republic of Differences ; De la citoyenneté multiculturelle à la république des différences
Are specific rights edicted to protect the identities of various minorities justified by the respect owed to cultural difference, as Will Kymlicka argues ? The multicultural citizenship project, far from being a national curiosity, raises questions of fundamental interest to all democratic States - it enhances how inadequate the model of religious tolerance may prove when used to protect the right to cultural difference. Indeed, if beliefs belong to the private sphere, cultural identity is obviously a public matter, since no civic nation can be said to exist without some sort of ethnic identity as well. This work aims at shedding a new light on the problem worked out by the Canadian philosopher and the limits of the solution he offers, by using the theories of ethnic identities in modern societies – especially in France – as elaborated by social sciences. The works of Dominique Schnapper et Gérard Noiriel are thus used to understand the ethnic component of a national community, as, in a theoretical level, they promote an original way of achieving this aim – through Emile Durkheim's theory of solidarity. This work purports to show that this theory promotes an idea of national identity that remains open to cultural pluralism, and to study how it grounds the legitimacy of cultural recognition in the philosophical soil, not of political liberalism but of republicanism. The fact that Habermas' theory of the public sphere and of the democratic right pushes Durkheim's theory further confirms that it can provide an alternative way of taking into account the project of a republic that would be respectful for differences.
