PurposeThis paper seeks to explore whether predisposition towards foreign brands and consumer acculturation would differ across demographic segments in an emerging market (India). Further, the paper aims to investigate if predisposition towards foreign brands (acting as a proxy for forces of globalization) would lead to consumer acculturation among consumers in India.Design/methodology/approachInstruments to measure predisposition towards foreign brands and consumer acculturation were developed on the basis of extensive literature review. The data comprised of urban, educated, middle‐class Indian consumers. The data were collected using structured questionnaire. ANOVA and T‐test results were used to determine if extent of predisposition towards foreign brands and consumer acculturation would differ across demographic segments. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the impact of predisposition towards foreign brands on consumer acculturation.FindingsThe findings indicate that significant difference exists among various demographic segments with respect to predisposition towards foreign brands and consumer acculturation. Also, predisposition towards foreign brands does impact consumer acculturation among Indian consumers. Various demographic factors such as age, income and educational qualification level significantly affect this causal relationship.Practical implicationsThis paper provides interesting insights about the buying behavior of Indian consumers. These insights would enable corporate managers to develop more focused strategies catering to the Indian consumers.Originality/valueThe paper empirically demonstrates that Indian consumers, when segregated into various demographic segments, do show significant differences in their predisposition towards foreign brands and consumer acculturation. It also ascertains that predisposition towards foreign brands does lead to consumer acculturation.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to estimate the extent of susceptibility to interpersonal influence and price sensitivity prevalent among Indian youth, to test if there is a relationship between these two constructs and identify the reason for the same.Design/methodology/approachIn order to empirically test the given objectives, instruments to measure susceptibility to interpersonal influence as well as price sensitivity were developed by using inputs from the literature. Responses were elicited from a sample of Indian youth (between 16 to 25 years) residing in various Indian cities. Relevant statistical tools were used to analyze the data.FindingsIndian youth showed high scores on their traditional consumer behavioral traits of susceptibility to interpersonal influence and price sensitivity. It was shown that susceptibility to interpersonal influence had a significant impact on the level of price sensitivity among Indian youth. Gender played a significant role in this relationship.Practical implicationsThe results provide many interesting insights with respect to the consumer behavioral traits of Indian youth. These insights will enable managers to develop effective marketing‐mix strategies, which would cater to the requirements of the Indian youth population.Originality/valueThis is the only contemporary paper in the extant literature which measures the level of susceptibility to interpersonal influence and price sensitivity prevalent among Indian youth and which attempts to identify an empirical relationship among these important constructs.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to empirically substantiate if the forces of globalization are impacting consumer culture and behavioral traits in a developing country (India).Design/methodology/approachFive hypotheses had been constructed to address the gaps in the literature with respect to the influence of globalization on prevalent consumer culture of a developing nation. Predisposition towards foreign brand among Indian consumers was taken as a proxy for global flows and its influence was studied on the existing materialistic values among the Indian consumers. The study covered a sample size of 557 respondents from five major cities in India. The raw data were collected with the help of structured questionnaire and analysis was done by using various relevant statistical techniques.FindingsThe results showed that predisposition towards foreign brands had a significant impact on materialistic values among the Indian consumers. The younger Indian consumers had significantly higher materialistic values than the older age groups. Lower income groups have showed significantly greater materialistic values than the higher income groups. Significant positive relationships were shown between materialistic values and the buyer behavior traits studied.Practical implicationsThe managers should concentrate on the younger consumers, as they are the ones who are showing a definitive change in their buying behavior and increasing materialistic values. Alternatively, managers could modify their products to suit the requirements of older consumers.Originality/valueThe study empirically showed that Indian consumers' predisposition towards foreign brands and their materialistic values had significant positive correlation among them. Also, predisposition towards foreign brands along with demographical variables like age and gender significantly impact the materialistic values prevalent among Indian consumers.

Multivariate frailty approaches are most commonly used to define distributions of random vectors, which represent lifetimes of individuals or components and stochastically compare them in terms of various multivariate orders. In this paper, we study a multivariate shared reversed frailty model and a general multivariate reversed frailty mixture model, and derive sufficient conditions for some of the stochastic orderings to hold among the random vectors. We also consider a particular case of a general multivariate mixture model in which the baseline distribution function is represented in terms of a copula and study stochastic comparisons (stochastic and lower orthant order) among the two random vectors.

Purpose
Corporate leadership and environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance are closely intertwined, as effective corporate leadership can facilitate the achievement of strong ESG performance. Thus, the purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of corporate board leadership on the ESG performance of listed firms.


Design/methodology/approach
The sample has been taken from the listed firms of the Nifty 500 index spanning the period of 10 years from 2012 to 2022. Dynamic panel data estimations are applied through a fixed effect model.


Findings
The findings of this study revealed that board size, board independence and board qualification have a significant positive influence on ESG performance. It is evident that good corporate governance practices can positively influence ESG performance by fostering accountability, transparency and ethical behavior, as well as better integrating ESG considerations into their decision-making processes and ensuring that ESG issues are prioritized at the highest levels of management. Further findings also revealed that chief executive officer (CEO) duality has a significant negative relationship with ESG performance, which goes against the belief of stakeholder theory.


Social implications
It has practical implications for policymakers, as they can enact new regulations pertaining to the CEO's position in the organizations to make corporate governance responsible for improved sustainability and ESG performance.


Originality/value
There are very few studies analyzing the impact of corporate board structure on ESG performance related to emerging markets. Thus, this study contributes to that literature by using the methodology GMM panel data for the first time as per our knowledge

Chronic suppurative otitis media is defined as a chronic inflammation of the middle ear cleft, which presents with recurrent ear discharge through a tympanic membrane perforation. The purpose of this study was to find pattern of bacteriology in patients of atticoantral type of chronic suppurative otitis media as it will help the clinician to decide the effective antibiotics to be prescribed. This prospective and observational study was conducted in the Department of ENT in collaboration with Department of Microbiology, Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh. The ear discharge specimen of all patients meeting the inclusion criteria were collected and sent for microbial examination. Culture positive samples were subjected to antibiotic sensitivity. A total of one hundred ears (mean age 27.33 years) clinically diagnosed with chronic suppurative otitis media, atticoantral type were included in this study based on the preset inclusion and exclusion. The male: female ratio in our patients was 0.94:1. Ninety-seven (96.9%) patients had unilateral disease, while 3 (3.1%) patients had bilateral disease. Twenty-eight percent of the total samples were sterile. The most common bacteria isolated were Pseudomonas aeruginosa (27.1%), Methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (23.3%) and Proteur mirabilis (6.5%). was sensitive to polymyxin B (100%) followed by ciprofloxacin (46.4%), neomycin (42.9%) and gentamicin (42.9%). Polymyxin B is the most effective antibiotic against the cultured bacteria followed by gentamicin, ciprofloxacin and neomycin.

Introduction: The quick turn to online platforms from contact learning during COVID-19 remained challenging for both teachers as well for students. This studywas done with the aim to know the perception and feed back of under-graduate medical students on virtual classes during the pandemic. Material & Methods: This was a cross-sectional questionnaire based multi-centric study. Questionnaire in the form of Google form was distributed to the undergraduate medical students from various MBBS professionals studying in various medical colleges across North India. The completed questionnaire was collected and data was analyzed. Results: 40% students were from government, 52% from private medical colleges and 8% from AIIMS/ SGPGI. Majority of students were using mobile (63.7%) for e learning, using 4G internet (70.6%). Mostly the private medical colleges (73%) and only 4.5% government colleges were conducting the live video classes. Rest of them was providing the soft copy of the study material to the students. Based on the feedback by the students, about one third of the students (36.7%) appreciated the online platform in the current scenario as well for future in the combination with traditional classroom teaching. Discussion: The e-learning was the need of the hour as every day is important for a medical student and the learning has to be uninterrupted. Although helpful, e-learning alone is a far cry from face‐to‐face interaction between students and teachers. Finding the right balance of class-room teaching combined with e-learning should become the norm for future students.
